Don't let the EU break our Internet - tell your MEP to save it before 20 June

On 20-21 June, the European Parliament will vote on the Copyright Directive. Members of the parliament are the only ones that can stand in the way of bad copyright legislation. Tell them you need them to protect your Internet against surveillance and censorship machines!

Stand up and ask Europe to protect Your Internet

The Internet lets us access more information than ever before, find a rich diversity of news sources, keep in touch with our friends, find new music and videos, and more. Why is it so awesome? Because what you see and do online is up to *you* not some big business or bureaucrat.

The European Commission and the Council want to destroy the Internet as we know it and allow big companies to control what we see and do online. Should Article 13 of the Copyright Directive proposal be adopted, it will impose widespread censorship of all the content you share online. The European Parliament is the only one that can step in and Save your Internet.

Contact Members of the European Parliament before 20 June and tell them you need copyright laws that protect your Internet, an Internet where you can share news and culture with your friends and family, where you can expect to be treated fairly and where your rights as EU citizens are protected.

Article 13 threatens EVERYTHING you do on the Internet

Use this tool to ensure your representative is speaking up and stopping rules that impose censorship through content filtering.

You can use our points below to help construct an original message in your own words.

  • Creativity and free speech will be harmed by Article 13 because algorithms struggle to tell the difference between infringement and the legal use of copyrighted material vital to research, commentary, parodies and more. This is far too high a cost for enforcing copyright.
  • No filter can possibly review every form of content covered by the proposal including text, audio, video, images and software. Article 13's mandate is technically infeasible and it is absurd to expect courts in 27 EU Member States to be constantly working out what the “best” filters might be.
  • It is a bad idea to make Internet companies responsible for enforcing copyright law. To ensure compliance and avoid penalties, platforms are sure to err on the side of caution and overblock. To make compliance easier, platforms will adjust their terms of service to be able to delete any content or account for any reason. That will leave victims of wrongful deletion with no right to complain – even if their content was perfectly legal.
What to write

Use this tool to call your representative for free directly at his/her Brussels office and voice your concerns about Article 13. You will find instructions below, along with the suggested talking points.

  • Please visit this page during business hours to connect your call: Monday-Friday, 9:00-18:00 CEST.
  • Make sure you have your phone nearby.
  • When you click the CALL NOW button, the system will call your phone and patch you through to with your country’s representative(s) on the relevant committees. If you have selected several MEPs and just finished calling one, the tool will automatically patch you through to the next one.
What happens when you click ‘CALL’

  • Say your name, where you live, what you’re calling about and a bit about yourself (eg. you are a parent, a student, an artist, retired, etc.)
  • Tell them you oppose Article 13 — the proposal to make websites build upload filters acting as censorship machines.
  • (If applicable) Give an example of how content filtering has had a negative impact on you. Have you had something you made deleted or blocked from posting on the Internet? Has someone taken down content you had permission and the rights to use? Seen comments you made disappear for no reason?
  • Thank the person at the end of the line, and if you are talking to an assistant encourage them to pass on your message to your MEP. Even if you don’t reach your MEP personally, it's important to leave a message.
