"We don't know much about the Big Bang Theory - other than that it's the name of a popular sitcom about some nerds and the fact that, well, it happened. And in this instance, our severely limited knowledge is a good thing, as one physicist is urging us to scrap everything in favour of an entirely different theory.

Physicist Juliano César Silva Neves, from the University of Campinas in Brazil, has rejected the idea that the universe began with a Big Bang billions of years ago - as we've been taught to believe for our whole lives.

His theory, published in the journal General Relativity and Gravitation, shuns the idea that the universe began with a singularity (an infinitely dense volume of energy) before expanding out into the cosmos we call home. Instead, he suggests the 'Big Bounce' theory, which centres on a collapse and expansion process..."

The company is planning to build a power plant in California that turns the methane gas produced by cow manure into water, electricity, and hydrogen. Chernobyl is Slated to Become a $1.2 Million Solar Farm

"By forcing light to go through a smaller gap than ever before, a research team at Imperial College London has taken a step toward computers based on light instead of electrons.

Light would be preferable for computing because it can carry much-higher-density information, it’s much faster, and more efficient (generates little to no heat). But light beams don’t easily interact with one other. Alibaba starts $1.5 billion anti-poverty fund

"Alibaba Group on Friday launched a 10 billion yuan (US$1.51 billion) fund to support China’s ambitious poverty alleviation campaign.

The Alibaba Poverty Relief Fund will have the $1.51 billion donated over the next five years.

China has already lifted more than 500 million people out of poverty after three decades of economic reforms on the mainland and President Xi Jinping has made it a policy priority with a plan to eradicate extreme poverty by 2020.

Alibaba executives will be assigned to work on projects including education, poverty relief among women, developing sales of rural products from impoverished regions, and initiatives combining poverty alleviation and environment protection.
