Devil's River

Fall meets winter on the Devil's River in west Texas. The river is all but hidden in the desert hills and bluffs. It is a narrow ribbon of life in a rough country. There is only one place you can even access the river easily, the rest being bordered by private property. As such it is seldom visited and only a few intrepid people will attempt to float it. Here I was going to Big Bend and stopped to catch a view of fall color and snow on the dry hills above the river.

Devil's River

In the far reaches of west Texas is the Devil's River.  It arises in the area around Sonora and Ozona and runs south to join the Rio Grande at Lake Amistad.  It is hauntingly beautiful and so remote it is the cleanest river in the state.  It is a narrow ribbon of green flowing through hilly desert country.

There is very little access to the river.  With only a short stretch of a rural highway that can see the river and only one water crossing.  The rest is private ranches making visiting it or floating it difficult.

There is also a remote state natural area that takes some effort to see that also has a little access.  But for all practical purposes the river is going to be unseen but for a few hardy souls who make a big effort to do so.

On my trip to Big Bend in December, I spent a very long day driving to the park and zig-zagging to stay south and east of a snow and ice line.  That round about route took me down the road  to that one crossing of the Devil's River.  It was the highlight of my day.

Ten miles up the road was heavy overcast and falling snow.  Here I was on the edge of the front and only some traces of snow were to be seen.

The river was running clear and cold and I stood here taking in the scene.  The banks are lined with trees and the riparian habitat is quite green and lush.  However, even looking at the hills here you can see they are bare desert hills.  The river is just a ribbon of life.

Perhaps one day I will get to float this river and see what lies for miles south of here.
