How much can you save on auto insurance by raising your deductible?

That is a question that is often asked by people in the Philadelphia area that are looking for ways to save money on their auto insurance. The deductible is the amount pay out of pocket for an auto insurance claim before your coverage kicks in.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the average auto insurance premium is $841 per year.

A study by Quadrant Information Services examined the average cost of increasing an auto insurance deductible by looking at two percentage increases and their respective average savings. Here is what they found:

- Increasing the deductible from $500 to $1,000 resulted in a 9% savings (average $72 per year)

- Increasing the deductible from $500 to $2,000 resulted in a 15% savings (average $126 per year)

"Increasing your deductible as a way to save money only makes sense if you can afford the out-of-pocket money you’ll need should you have to file a claim," says Kevin Lynch, associate professor of insurance for American University. "If you don’t, it makes no sense to save $100 a year to only then get stuck with a $500 repair bill you can't afford."

The best thing you can do is discuss it with your auto insurance agent and choose a deductible that makes sense for you.

Philadelphia Neighborhood Dealing w/ a Sinkhole (http://gplnk.co/2iD0N80)

Did you think sinkholes only happened in Florida? Think again. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, although Florida is one of the most vulnerable states when it comes to sinkholes, about 35 to 40 percent of the entire U.S. is susceptible to sinkholes. The most damage from sinkholes tends to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. (Source: http://gplnk.co/2iD2frc)

While some of these sinkholes occur naturally, others, like the one in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, are human induced. What likely happened, said John DiGiulio, spokesman for the Philadelphia Water Department, is that a sewer line under the street developed a hole, and began to take in dirt over several months. The continued erosion formed a void that caused the collapse.

Now, the question becomes... are sinkholes covered under your home insurance? And... the answer is... maybe. The best thing to do is to check with your home insurance agent to find out if you are covered.

This is pretty massive; hopefully, there won't be any damage to the homes on the street.

Review your coverage at least annually... more often if you have made improvements to your home that increase its value.

Each year, you should review your home insurance coverage and make adjustments as needed to make sure that you have the coverage you need ... or even to reduce costs if you no longer need as much.

If you remodeled or improved your home over the past year, it may increase the estimated replacement cost of your home. It may even be part of your policy's provisions that you need to notify your insurance company within a certain time period if it increased your home's value. Talk to your agent to find out and to get your policy adjusted.

If you are in the Philadelphia area, I would love to speak with you to discuss your home insurance needs. Click here for a free home insurance quote (http://gplnk.us/2gWgev7) and then give me a call at 215-725-1000.

Many Philadelphia #homeowners spend more on heating their home than necessary. Here are 5 common reasons why:

1) They aren't identifying and addressing leaks in their home.
Did you know that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says that small leaks can add up to the equivalent of a window being left open? Simple fixes like placing a draft guard (or even a rolled up towel) at the base of your doors can make a difference. If you really want to start saving money on your energy costs (as much as 30 percent) consider getting a home energy audit from a certified auditor who will use a blower device and other tools to find all the areas in your home that have air leaks.

2) They are making the leaks worse by closing vents, which increases air pressure in your ducts.
While it may seem like a good idea to close the vents in the rooms you don't use very often, this can leave fewer places for the air to go and can cause increased leakage in ducts, resulting in lower air flow and higher energy use.

3) They are not using a programmable thermostat.
If you do not have a programmable thermostat, chances are you will leave your heat running all the time rather than set it lower while you are asleep or not at home.

4) They are not doing routine maintenance.
Changing your air filters and other routine home maintenance tasks can have an impact on your energy bills.

5) They are ignoring problems.
Do you have certain rooms in your house that you are using a space heater in? Does it still feel chilly? Rather than buying more space heaters, you need to figure out the root of the problem and address it.

Nobody likes high heating bills. If yours are high, take the time to make some changes and get them under control. And, if your home insurance is too high, visit my website to get a price quote: http://gplnk.co/2fXyZJO
