It's a decision that is often made out of necessity, not as a way to exploit the kid for the parents' own gain.

But the characterization here seems to suggest a fundamental misunderstanding of the difficult decisions that poor/endangered parents have always had to make. Whether it was leaving a child behind (as was more common in the past), or taking them with you (more common now)...

There has absolutely been a sea change in border crossers -- from individual adults to, increasingly, parents traveling with kids -- which deserves ample coverage. And yes, it a response to laws and settlements that make it easier to both enter and stay with a child.

Tragically, human smugglers have always seen children as "boarding passes," "meal tickets," or worse. That's 90-170 people according to this story, not the tens of thousands of parents who've traveled here with their legit children.

With respect, I agree with this thread. The numbers simply don't support the thesis. The implicit message about Central Americans is troubling. And this sentence is not ok, "young children and teenagers are seen as boarding passes to the flight for economic survival." twitter.com/jdelreal/statu…
