Dairy farmers lose about $0.50 on every gallon of milk they produce. These conditions are forcing farmers out of business, which is bad news for the land they steward and the rural communities who depend on the financial health of local agriculture:

75% of farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers polled had been directly affected by opioid misuse, addiction, or overdose. A sobering read on depression, injury and what is happening in our farming communities. We have to do a better job for our farmers.

The good news is that the updated NAFTA deal will increase U.S. farm exports by $450 million. The bad news is that those gains are dwarfed by the $1.8 billion losses due to retaliatory tariffs by Mexico and Canada.

Because we could use some good news. "More women today are in leadership positions in farming & ag. In addition there's been a surge of women starting their own small farms, which has likely tipped the scale in women's favor when it comes to compensation."

A bill introduced by & would impose an 18-month moratorium on food and agriculture mergers and establish a commission to study the impacts of consolidation. Today, NFU and 212 other organizations are urging Congress to support this crucial legislation.

Corporate consolidation has contributed to declining farm incomes, loss of choice for farmers, stagnant wages & increased layoffs for workers, the erosion of rural economic vitality, and a less resilient food system:

Just a handful of corporations control every step of poultry production, giving them almost complete control over contract poultry growers. This leaves growers far too vulnerable to unfair treatment, manipulation and financial ruin:

Wishing a very happy 100th birthday to Ruth Kobell! She has been an active Farmers Union member since 1939, serving as a local & county officer, assisting with education programs, acting as NFU secretary, and becoming the first registered woman lobbyist for a farm organization!

The updated NAFTA deal only opens 4% of Canada's dairy market to U.S. farmers, which won't even make a dent in the American milk surplus. "The only thing that will help us is less milk or more consumption of milk."

Hey Phil - most farmers actually rely on pollinators for the livelihoods and want to do everything they can to keep bees healthy. We offer educational materials on alternative pest management techniques-- if you're curious, you can check that out here:

Beginning farmers often can't afford to buy their own land, but makes leasing land easy & affordable. "Typically, a lease doesn't require a hefty downpayment or burdensome loan, & the financial risk is shared between the landowner & tenant."
