Page on Front “Lean UX Canvas”

Yesterday morning, I got together with @karmatosed to talk through Page on Front. We hopped on a call and went through a modified version of the Lean UX Canvas. We wanted to step back and wrap our head around who uses this feature and what kind of problems they have using it, and I wanted to test out how remote whiteboarding for core design could work.

You can check out the full, messy version on Mural, or you can click through to the full post and see a neat, curated version. 🙂

We’ve also created a text-only version if you’d prefer to review that way.

Weekly Design Updates

This is the weekly call for updates for those contributing to design, as outlined here.

The idea of these it to keep all designers connected. If you are contributing to design please add your reply as a comment to this post by Thursday 23:00 UTC. All comments will be combined into a weekly update post on Friday for the design team.

Not a designer but you have something you’d like us to work on? No problem, you can also leave a comment. Just tell us what it is, if a specific team or skill also tell us that.

Just reply to the following:

  • What did you work on this past week? Anything completed (don’t forget a link to show us the amazing work!)?
  • What are you currently focusing on?
  • Anything you need help with? Got a tricky project? Are you looking for a task? Perhaps you know about a task that needs a designer or need a buddy to work on something (let’s support each other)?
  • Any links for inspiration you want to share (doesn’t have to be WordPress design links)?

Image Widget Link Usability Testing

Hey folks 👋

We’ve gotten some general feedback that the context switch makes it feel different from adding an image to a page or a post, so people are having some trouble finding where in the image widget to add a link. I ran a couple usability tests on the existing image widget, as well as this PR from @timmydcrawford to expose the link within the widget itself. We wanted to compare both versions and see which one was easier.

I want to share the test details, some stats, and finally some conclusions I found from testing, which I’ve summarized into a list organized by 👓 observations, 💡 ideas, and 🐛 bugs.

If you’re interested, you can view all the videos in this Cloudup gallery. They’re very short! Almost all of them are between five and eight minutes long, with one longer outlier of 11 minutes.

Editor Focus & Paternity Leave

For the past 7 months, I’ve worked on the Editor focus as design lead, with @matveb as the tech lead. Around the 21st of August I will be going on paternity leave, as my wife and I are expecting a baby boy!

We are currently working towards a feature complete milestone for the project, which I expect we’ll reach before I have to step out. Gutenberg at this milestone will still require a bunch of polish, tweaks, and bug-fixes, but the goal is for the foundation and high level design to be in place.

This milestone is a good time for me to step down as design lead, and let the focus get an infusion of fresh energy and ideas, so it can keep up its brisk pace. In that vein, I’ve chatted with @karmatosed, and she’d love to take over the role. She has great design skills, and a whole swath of communication skills that will be great for the project. I look forward to work on Gutenberg in a designer capacity, with her carrying the overview. Thank you Tammie! 🌠
