It’s not a coincidence that extremism rises in failed societies. Either way, read this.

Orwell's point, which we elide, is that love itself was a crime. Banning words wasn't only to subvert logic, reason, science, and so on, for Big Brother was eminently logical, but by subjugating us, to turn us into little oppressors ourselves, corroding away our humanity.

Enough. The last thing I'll say is that such giants leaps in authoritarianism are not easily undone. It's a fiction to suppose that elections can so simply undo the damage caused by extremists ripping holes in history, reality, memory, truth.

I don't know if Americans don't get it, don't care, or are weary. Whichever, "banning words" is a giant leap, not a little step in authoritarianism. Democracy collapses precisely by tearing fissues in reality. The world is appalled.

Can you imagine any other rich country banning words like "science" and "evidence"? Even a poor one? Can you imagine the outcry if one did? What does it mean when words are "banned"? The mind reels. Dark ages falling, day by day.

Puerto Rico, Day 87: —Millions of people still w/o power —Hundreds of thousands still w/o clean water —Still a humanitarian emergency With no power, there's no jobs. With no jobs, there's no money. With no money, you can't pay your mortgage.

Sure Is funny how the same folks oh so worried about private condemnations of hate speech going too far are deafeningly quiet when the government bans actual words
