    Nowadays I learn new mathematics primarily through coding. I build a model system in Python, write unit tests, construct examples and iterate. There are limits to this style, but it's surprisingly powerful. I suspect the math classes of the future will adopt this system

    In my experience there are two important phases of empirical inquiry: 1) understanding what *might be* happening and 2) rigorously determining what *is* happening. I think we’ve collectively underinvested in (1).

    Pedagogical idea: maybe students would better understand the distinction in "correlation is not causation" if more time was spent highlighting the value of correlation alone (e.g., for diagnosis or prediction). I wonder if the focus on identification actually makes this worse.
