WRITING A PAPER IN WORD: FONT TIPS Contrary to widely held belief (among LaTeX fands), it is easy to write a nice-looking paper in Word. You just have to do three things: (1) use styles; (2) avoid hideous fonts; (3) unleash the fonts’ potential. 2\
The styles menu lets you apply a consistent set of formatting rules to paragraphs of the same type. Body text gets a “Normal” style. If you need to change a formatting decision — some journal requires a particular format — you can edit the style and the changes will propagate to all of the affected paragraphs. 4/pic.twitter.com/r7cqwsIagj
One of the things you can change in your style is the font. Unless you’re sure you know what you're doing, you should use Times New Roman for manuscripts. 5/pic.twitter.com/uOIXdGlUYt
Most Microsoft fonts are horrible. Arial looks like somebody left Helvetica in the dryer too long. MS Garamond looks like Adobe Garamond after a stomach flu. Calibri... meh. 6/
Cambria is the worst. It was designed to have a consistent look on rickety inkjet printers and on pixelated monitors. Neither reading technology is common today. Cambria is as obsolete as it is ugly. 7/
TNR isn’t perfect. It was designed by a newspaper for legibility in tight spaces (thus saving paper). It is still your students’ top pick for getting under a page limit. It can be easy to miss typos in TNR because the letters are small. 8/
But Times New Roman is readable and inoffensive. And if you fix two more things, Times New Roman looks quite good in Word. 9/

Kerning smartly adjusts the space between letters to improve aesthetics and readability. Modern fonts are carefully adjusted to be good at this, but Word disables kerning by default. Turn it on. 11/
Kerning is the main thing LaTeX does intelligently that makes its defaults look good. Boom, you’re at pro level already. But let’s keep going. 12/
Go ahead and turn on ligatures, too. Ligatures are the fancy renderings that make “ff” and “fl” touch each other. It looks nice. Set to "Standard and Contextual" or this can get carried away. 13/
I advocate for turning on old-style numbers, too. They are easier to tell apart than equal-height numbers, and I think they look neat. This one is a matter of taste, though. 14/

Microsoft’s equation editor requires a special math font. There aren’t others installed by default, but the default — Cambria Math — is ugly, and next to TNR looks out of place. 16/
There are not a ton of Word math fonts, but there is a free font called XITS Math that is designed to set equations that look like mathy Times New Roman. Install it. 17/https://github.com/alif-type/xits
