Ubuntu's packages can be pretty old, but for some desktop programs (like Vim) I'd much rather have the latest version, as newer versions often fix various bugs.

How can I get a reasonably recent Vim version on Ubuntu?

Perhaps jonathonf's PPA might work for you. But better if you are using Ubuntu 16.04, because he says "As of October 24th, I'll only be packaging for 14.04 if it's an easy update." – joeytwiddle 4 hours ago

@joeytwiddle The thing with PPAs though is that you're trusting a Random Stranger From The Internet™ with root access to your system, which is perhaps not a great idea depending on your security requirements and level of paranoia (see: Are PPA's safe to add to my system and what are some “red flags” to watch out for? and Is there any guarantee that software from Launchpad PPAs is free from viruses and backdoor threats?). – Carpetsmoker 4 hours ago
