Hello, I'm Rebecca. Whiteboards suck. I can't hold a marker for over a few minutes, I can type nonstop. I wrote Bard's Tale III.
-
-
-
You created Bard's Tale III?!?! *bows* *bows*
-
Yes, I created Bard's Tale III and Dragon Wars.
-
Amazing. Bard's Tale trilogy was a big part of my childhood!
-
I'm really happy you liked it. I hoped you liked the Auto-map feature and the music for the IIgs versions
-
Oh it's been years.. I don't remember what auto-map looked like, but I'm sure I found it useful! I played on the Amiga.

Valid point. Hopefully we won't get to the point where people take as much pride in ignorance about CS as they currently do about math.
-
Horses for courses. Some people need to know algos deeply. Info system programmers very rarely so.
-
we so desperately want (our work) to matter, so we interview for gods to feel like gods, and not what the job needs.
-
I'm amazed that expecting an absolute _minimum_ of CS knowledge from a programmer is now considered elitist. Bubble sort!!
-
I knew I was out of touch with 'modern' programming culture, but I honestly didn't expect it to be this radical.
-
but webapp (maj of dev jobs) have completely diff reqs than codec authoring. Latter need deep CS, former want to need it
-
Right. I just didn't expect bubble sort to be considered deep. I am clearly out of touch. What is considered basic today?
-
Bubble Sort is not basic CS but basic CS _history_. Basic CS would be "write any simple sorting algo" IMO.

I love the thought here, but what is the solution to hiring competent programmers then? Code tests online or in person?
-
Code tests suck too. I like the idea of giving them a semi-working GitHub repo and having them fix it, and add a few featrs
-
that is a great idea. It rolls up troubleshooting, code style, and code skill to some degree.
-
Yep. Nothing too involved though. I respect professionals' time and wouldn't ask them to spend more than two hours on it.
-
too many companies use interviews as ways to get 'free' ideas - contrib to open src may clarify purpose/intent
-
That CAN happen. I designed a coding test for new hires that was useless to us. Earthquake event log app. :)
-
<3 it! maybe we should spend a little timeto templatize the process, open src it? start by helping move needle?
-
Maybe. I think one issue is that if a particular test becomes too public or standardized, potential hires will(1/2)
