@ZLabe as for the #Arctic, we are now up to 156 days (~49% of year-to-date) of new daily record minimum sea ice extents in 2016 (JAXA)pic.twitter.com/5tMIJJDKRZ

@ZLabe ugh, and essentially no growth in Arctic sea ice with today's update (~7,300 km^2 increase, JAXA) as the stall continuespic.twitter.com/6ftaGmRi5B
@ZLabe @scotlandwx I'm confused, that doesn't seem to match the NOAA data (and isn't helped by the F17 problems).
@simon_rp84 this is sea ice "area" not extent for both the Arctic & Antarctic combined. The F17 has already been replaced by F18, no issues
@ZLabe @scotlandwx So this is the prototype product? Otherwise, what's the source?
@simon_rp84 it is all NSIDC data (extent/concentration) using F18 http://nsidc.org/the-drift/data-update/sea-ice-index-processing-resumed-with-dmsp-f18-satellite-data/ …
@ZLabe @scotlandwx You said before it was area, not extent...
@simon_rp84 correct, but you need to take concentration into account (% of sea water covered) with extent. Area is a derived figure.
@ZLabe Drop in sea ice area may mean that the average sea ice depth hiked keeping sea ice volume the same. How do you like this hypothesis?
@StoryReasoner we should have a better sense of current Arctic sea ice thickness/volume by the end of November
@ZLabe Zack, what is the maximum historic annual change in sea ice depth?
@StoryReasoner there is a great page from @PolarScience_UW with information on sea ice thickness/volume: http://psc.apl.uw.edu/research/projects/arctic-sea-ice-volume-anomaly/ …
@benking01 seriously? Ugh, so so wrong...
@ZLabe and someone's sabotaging the buoys too, it seems - http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/arctic-warming-rapidly-increasing-temperatures-are-possibly-catastrophic-for-planet-climate-a6896671.html …
#ClimateChange
@benking01 such a challenging time for communications... science says one, politics say another. It is no wonder there is public confusion
@ZLabe @pkedrosky Something wrong with graph? Official ones don't look anywhere so scary: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global-snow/201609 … http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph/ …pic.twitter.com/Nan3njItwe
@alteredq this is combined Arctic/Antarctic sea ice for "area"... not extent
@ZLabe Aha, so according to this FAQ "extent" is bigger and potentially more accurate than "area": http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/faq/#area_extent …
@ZLabe Now I see: in official ones Y values go from 0, in these Y values are truncated so it exaggerates. Still scary though not apocalyptic
