Firearms and Domestic Violence: The Intersections

Domestic abusers and firearms are a deadly combination. In the United States, when women are murdered, 40 to 50 perent are killed by their husband, boyfriend or ex-partner. In contrast, 5 to 8 percent of men are killed by their partner. In the past 18 years, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System has enforced the law that prevents convicted abusers from purchasing a firearm from federally licensed dealers. On December 2, 2016, ATF will have the distinct honor of hosting a ceremony to rename and dedicate ATF Headquarters as the “Ariel Rios Federal Building.” This is a moment of great pride for the ATF family. Today, on World AIDS Day 2016, the Department of Justice reaffirms the rights of people with HIV/AIDS to live free from stigma and discrimination. For the more than 1.2 million people in the United States with HIV, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guarantees each of them a full and equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from all our nation has to offer. Over the past year, the department has continued to vigorously enforce the ADA to combat HIV/AIDS discrimination and stigma.
