It’s not you- it’s your theme 
the academic theme is so well written it made it easy to adapt the post metadata! I will add that I have no tried 10+ Hugo themes in prep for @rstudio::conf and have not experienced smooth 
Yeah, that's something super important to know about Hugo: different themes have *completely* different information architectures!

+1! I have like half-baked partials for so many little things, and then come back to them only to realise I've totally forgotten how Hugo templating works
