One thing I'm continuing to follow is how left-y Jewish groups/leaders are reacting to this whole saga. As I said in my piece, groups that want to open more space for debate about Israel, like , are in some ways hurt most by the whole thing

“Instead of creating more space for critical debate about Israel, has added credence to a common caricature of the anti-Israel left: that opposition to Israel is partly fueled by conspiratorial anti-Semitism.” via

Without knowing people's hearts or motives, I would say it's pretty clear that activist environments on the left have ways of speaking that wander sideways into these tropes... Making it all the more difficult for a nuanced convo about Israel to happen.

Final thought, for now, which is somewhat ancillary to my article (which you should read): I've often wondered why it is that anti-Semitic tropes, which seem so obvious to Jews, often show up in conversations on the left.

I thought the most interesting statement to come out of all this was J Street's. The organization has backed Omar before, and one word jumped out at me from their reaction to her latest: "frustrated." They see how this episode sets them back.

Again and again, she has used anti-Semitic tropes to describe her anti-Israel positions. This empowers her opponents to say all critics of Israel are anti-Semites. It also shows that her read of the politics here is reductive.

A few thoughts on the controversy over Ilhan Omar. First, I think Rep. Omar has stepped into the Israel-Palestine arena at a time when more and more people are hungry for a robust debate about Israeli policies. Ironically, she just made that harder.

Have you been vacationing from Jewish/Muslim/Israel-Palestine Twitter over the last 24 hours? Would you like a rundown of Ilhan Omar's comments about Jews and money and Israel, including her recent apology? I've got it all here for you:

It's worth noting that a number of Southern Baptist leaders have made talking about -- and condemning -- sexual abuse central to their ministry, especially in recent years. Beth Moore is one:

Right! Except that all of the other churches in this story are also totally shaped by zoning, just in a different way...

One other quick note. There'll be a lot of focus coming up on sex abuse in the Catholic Church, which in some ways is easier to track because of centralization. In the SBC, a Protestant tradition with local church autonomy, abuse is that much more hidden.

This investigation -- first part published yesterday by the Houston Chronicle -- is a horrifying look at the scope of abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention. Often, leaders knew it was happening.

A great example of how zoning often defines American religious life:
