Bookworm Beat 12/22/16 — the random news edition

Random news squaresThis is a random news edition because I’ve spent the day doing such scintillating things as cleaning the kitchen (including behind the refrigerator) to quell an ant infestation and spraying clothes with Pemethrin to prepare for an upcoming trip to some malarial hot spots. Throughout the course of the day, whenever I had a minute, I grabbed random, but interesting links I found on Facebook, through my favorite blogs and, always my best source, from friends who email me. Because I’m heading out soon for Cirque du Soliel, brevity will be the name of the game.

How to handle rape. In America, we’re told that telling women actions they can take to defend against rape is a no-no because it constitutes “blaming the victim.” Instead, men should be taught not to rape. In Austria, which is yet another European country overrun by non-white, non-Christian (or Jewish or Hindu or . . . ) men who come from a decided rape culture, it’s all up to the women to protect themselves.

How to deal with terrorism. Writing at The Atlantic, Uri Friedman looks at the frighteningly simple truck attack in Berlin and concludes that there are only three ways to deal with terrorism on European soil: secure public spaces, expand government surveillance, or learn to live with it. He seems to have forgotten a fourth approach: Expel all the recently admitted refugees. And then expel all known trouble makers. And then break down the ghettos in which the remaining Islamic communities incubate fanaticism.

Progressives say their massive freakout is warranted. Even Progressives are realizing that their complete meltdown is out of the ordinary. But the LA Times is there to assure us that Trump is so horrible — and his supporters so evil — that Progressive mental collapse is an appropriate response. Really.

Ivanka is too good to help women. Elle, yet another women’s magazine that sells Leftism, assures us that Ivanka is a disaster for women. Hillary’s many (ahem) accomplishments were an inspiration, of course, but Ivanka is so damn accomplished that she’s intimidating and sets women’s rights back by decades, maybe even centuries. Moreover, the entire goal of her father’s upcoming presidency is an exercise in nepotism to benefit her alone. Really.

Bookworm Beat 12/21/16 — the “election that never ends” edition

December 21, 2016 by Bookworm 2 Comments

Donald Trump Election 2017Yes, the Electoral College has spoken on the election, but the Progressives’ weeping, wailing, beating of breasts, and rending of garments continues unabated. That’s why you’ll find these articles pertinent, interesting, amusing and, sometimes, frightening.

Don’t attack people from whom you want something. Hillary wanted votes from Americans but she couldn’t help herself. Speaking to a sympathetic audience, she had to attack vast swaths of America’s citizens as a “basket of deplorables,” guilty of a variety of moral sins. She may have graduated from Yale Law but she apparently never learned there the first rule of making your case to a jury: “Don’t attack people from whom you want something.”

Hillary’s most ardent followers haven’t learned that lesson either. They’re so busy pointing at Comey (never mind that he got on the case because Hillary broke the law), Russians (never mind that the DNC and Podesta practically gave their information away), and anyone or anything else that attracts their angry, short attention span, that they’re missing the main lesson: You don’t win by hating voters.

Over at the San Francisco Chronicle, columnist Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez looked at the numbers after the election and decided that an entire section of the City is irredeemable — and darn if he isn’t calling them out on it:

Bookworm Room 12/21/16 — the “don’t be afraid, it’s just Islam” edition

Islam ISIS one finger salute

Don’t let the bodiless head frighten you. Can’t you see that the Muslim is smiling?

Islam is in the news again, thanks to an ambassador’s death in Ankara and another truck jihad, this time in Berlin. I’ve got a few Islam-themed posts to share with you, all of which say that we should indeed be afraid, because it’s Islam.

Before I get to those posts, let me say that the Western fear of Islam is not tantamount to the German’s ginned up fear about Jews during the 1930s. Jews were peaceably living their lives throughout Europe, just as they had done for centuries. There were no terrorist attacks; there was no fiery rhetoric of conquest. There were antisemitic conspiracy theories that used invisible lines to connect imaginary dots.

With Islam the situation is different: Since 9/11, radical Muslims have been mobilized throughout the world. The Religion of Peace, which tracks murders committed explicitly in Islam’s name, says that there have been almost 30,000 of these Islamic-inspired attacks since 9/11. Please note, that number isn’t counting “deaths;” it’s counting “attacks.” Most of these attacks are aimed at creating mass deaths, whether in churches in Egypt, market stalls in Berlin, sidewalks and nightclubs in France, or quiet streets in Tel Aviv. Moreover, that number doesn’t even address ISIS’s depredations across increasingly larger swaths of the Middle East, nor does it look at what is essentially a raging Sunni-Shia war in Syria.

That we view Islam as dangerous is not the product of a fevered “Islamophobic” imagination; it is simply a matter of reading newspapers, noting the attacks, and noting how each is preceded by “Allahu Akbar,” and each is followed by a radical Islamist group (lately, ISIS), proudly taking responsibility for the death and bloodshed. With that in mind, here are some recent articles about the trouble with Islam.

Thought-Bubble-White-Board_8296556

Sorry for not posting today. It’s been all family all the time — and really, I’d be terribly ungrateful if I complained about the fact that my college-aged kids want to spend time with Mom. And then, in the small moments when it wasn’t family, I actually had legal work. Sometimes blogging just doesn’t happen.

Tomorrow promises to be better, at least starting around noon.

Until then, perhaps you have something you’d like to say here. Consider this your open thread.

Donald Trump is the right leader for a rapidly changing world

Donald TrumpEvery single day, I’m more optimistic about President Donald Trump. I strongly believe he is going to be the right American leader for the massive, and definitely dangerous, changes that are taking place in the world today.

One of the best analyses and predictions I’ve seen about a Donald Trump presidency in a brave, scary new world, comes from Joel Ross, a Democrat who deeply dislikes Trump. Because this great, possibly prescient rant, seems to be from an email that’s making the rounds, rather than from a post (I can’t find the post), I’m reprinting it in its entirety here.

I think you’ll find the rant as fascinating as I did because it takes a clear-eyed look at Europe and the Middle East and it acknowledges that the same traits that can make Trump a mean SOB in the business world also make him the best guy to represent American interests in a dangerous, fluid world:

In Ankara, ISIS is clearly behind Ambassador Karlov’s assassination *UPDATED*

December 19, 2016 by Bookworm 5 Comments

Is there any question that, when Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş killed Andrei Karlov in cold blood, he was doing so either at ISIS’s behest or as part of a lone wolf ISIS-inspired assassination? To me, this picture provides the only evidence one needs:

ISIS gesture Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş assassination Ambassador Karlov

We’ve seen that gesture before:

The Islamic State militants, known as ISIS, are now using a single, raised index finger as the symbol of their cause. It’s a well-known sign of power and victory around the world, but for ISIS, it has a more sinister meaning.

Nathaniel Zelinsky writes in Foreign Affairs that the gesture refers to the tawhid, “the belief in the oneness of God and a key component of the Muslim religion.” More specifically, though, it refers to their fundamentalist interpretation of the tawhid, which rejects any other view, including other Islamic interpretations, as idolatry. Zelinsky writes that when ISIS uses the gesture, it is affirming an ideology that demands the destruction of the West, as well as any form of pluralism. For potential recruits around the globe, it also shows their belief that they will dominate the world.

Here are some examples:

It’s not just campus crazies: Progressives’ pervasive immaturity

December 19, 2016 by Bookworm 16 Comments

Campus Progressives Immaturity Triggly PuffOne of the cultural concerns that may have undone Hillary Clinton is the way in which America’s college campuses foster immaturity in the young adults consigned to their care. Parents used to send their children to college as a step on the road to responsible adulthood. Nowadays, thanks to safe spaces, trigger warnings, and microaggressions, it seems as if little distinguishes college students from toddlers in preschool. A recent video about special snowflakes nicely sums up what’s happening to our young people:

College snowflakes are easy to notice (and to ridicule), but the reality is that the entire statist wing of American politics is locked into immature behaviors, ranging from the terrible twos to the equally terrible teens. There was, therefore, an element of truth to Michelle Obama’s icky little boast to Oprah (queen of emotional navel-gazing) that Barack is the grown-up in the White House, modeling mature behavior, and the rest of us in America are the kids looking up to him for help and guidance. Actually, someone made a pithy poster of Michelle’s core messages:

obama-michelle-lost

To the Progressives, Barack may indeed be the “grown-up,” but he’s only the “grown-up” in the way the bossiest child in a group of five-year-olds is the “Mommy” or “Daddy” when the kids decide to play house.

I’ve compiled a list of Progressive behaviors and thought patterns that are indistinguishable from infant, toddler, child, and teen behavior and thought patterns. See what you think and then tell me where I’m wrong or add more if you notice I’ve forgotten something.

#BoycottTheBoycotters: Organizing against the new Jim Crow

December 16, 2016 by Bookworm 12 Comments

#BoycottTheBoycottersI have to admit to being baffled that more people are not angry and joining with me in #BoycottingTheBoycotters. Instead, they seem disturbingly comfortable with the fact that a growing list of businesses at home and abroad have determined that 62,000,000 Americans have placed themselves so far beyond the pale that these businesses will no longer accept their custom and their money. To that end, they’ve promised, not only to pull ads from Breitbart, but to pull ads from any other site the mentally decompensating Progressives deem “racist” or “bigoted.”

As far as I’m concerned, we’re looking at the new Jim Crow. In this 21st century variation on a Democrat theme, Trump supporters, based upon the vile libel that Donald Trump is a racist, are cast in the role of American blacks. The boycotting businesses, meanwhile, are precisely replicating those Democrat-run businesses in the Jim Crow South who would not serve blacks.

To get a sense of the speed with which this Jim Crow initiative is growing, check out the latest chart I made which highlights in red the businesses that have gone Jim Crow in just three days (click on the chart to enlarge). I’m willing to bet that you’ve done business with several of these companies in the last few years. (I mean, Elsevier, for goodness sakes, which is one of the largest information sites in the world, and Kaplan Test Prep, which all of us, or are children, have used.)

Bookworm Beat 12/16/16 — the random politics edition

December 16, 2016 by Bookworm 6 Comments

Change the politicsThanks to my friends, I have an email box filled with links to fascinating, random politics. In keeping with that random spirit, I present to you this randomly organized post:

Principled journalism versus American journalism. Conservatives have been understandably charmed by the meltdown that Kurt Eichenwald, a Newsweak reporter suffered, first on Tucker Carlson’s show and then again after Carlson’s show in a series of tweets. Eichenwald scurried around like a maddened trapped rat, trying desperately to avoid Carlson’s direct question about Eichenwald’s unfounded, slanderous tweet claiming Trump checked into a mental hospital. Eichenwald ended the embarrassing debacle by blaming a tweet with a flashing GIF for his having a seizure and then announcing that he was taking time off from work on that account.

Eichenwald could have handled the whole thing differently. He could have followed this Spanish reporter who, upon learning that he’d relied on a poor source and made a false statement, took full responsibility for his failure and then voluntarily quit his job. In America, being a member of the mainstream media means that no apology is expected, unless it’s a non-apology apology, after which you get a better job or get your fake news turned into a movie.

Obama and that Russian hack. Okay, first off, I don’t believe in any Russian hack. I mean, we know that Russia and a lot of other nations spend a great deal of time probing America’s cyber weaknesses. The reality here, though, is that Russia did not mess with voting machines, or state or federal databases.

What someone did (either Russia or, more likely, an angry Bernie supporter) was send a phishing email to John Podesta, who took the bait and exposed his and the DNC’s actual emails to the eyes of the world. What the world saw was ugly. It wasn’t fake. It was the real Democrats being stupid, racist, and manipulative.

When it comes to real Russian hacking (the probing into state secrets, etc.), Obama has done nothing in eight years either to strengthen our cyber weaknesses or, for that matter, to harden America’s electric grid against an EMP attack. He’s done nothing at all but bring down America’s economy, America’s national security, and America’s standing in the world. John Podhortez has knocked one out of the park with this description of an Obama utterly passive in the face of every foreign threat or initiative.

stupid-leftists-hacking-russians-and-donna-brazile

Lately, the only thing that seems to induce some sort of activity in Obama is trying to make life more difficult for Trump by filling administrative positions that, traditionally, are left for the incoming president to fill. Perhaps Obama isn’t aware that Trump has no problem saying “You’re fired.”
