The North American Continent

Picture
If you wish to be notified via email when prints of North America are ready, there is a form on the contact page.
Our planet is far more miraculous than any fantasy world. From tundra to the tropics, it is overflowing with incredible complexity. One need not draw dragons roaming the wilderness when Earth’s fauna are so bizarre and beautiful. Thus, The North American Continent is a tribute to reality. By vividly illustrating geographic data, I hope to bring attention to the dynamism and mystique of our world. Even in a continent tamed by the Interstate and the Internet, there is a grand frontier alive and well.

An ongoing pictorial map, The North American Continent is drawn completely by hand with colour pencil and pen. It is a 59 x 47 inch (150 x 120 cm) cylindrical projection of the entire region, spanning from Alaska to Panama; Greenland to the Caribbean. As of May 2017 it stands around 90% complete and has thousands of features, including 400 animals and 600 cities and towns. From Los Angeles, California
to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, each locale is composed of real skylines and landmarks.

I've been working on The North American Continent since mid-2014, and am excited to now be in the last 10% of work. To stay up-to-date with the progress and release schedule, be sure to check in with the blog, Facebook, Instagram, or join the mailing list.

When clicked, each image in the gallery below (apart from the first, showing the original projection) will open a high-resolution zoomable version in a new tab - essential for appreciating the detail.

Enjoy having a look around. If you have any questions about the content, what remains of the map, release schedule and more, don't hesitate to get in touch.

The original projection used to create the coastline of the map. This gives a good idea of just where the finished product will span.

From Tehuantepec to Darién. Central America, complete as of 11 Jan 2017, was an awe-inspiring region to draw. It contains some of the densest, most complex work I've done. Click for detail.

The entire map as of 22 April 2017. Click for detail.

More revision, PNW. (Click for detail).

Northwest Mexico.
Picture
Cuba, Jamaica, The Bahamas. The ocean will completely transform the map, especially in island countries. It will be one of the last things I draw, however. For now, the blue aura around the coastlines is all I have! Stay tuned.
Picture
The southern 3/4 of Mexico. Mexico was an enormous undertaking, especially as I drew all 31 states. As with the USA and Canada, each state capital has its flag (in Mexico's case the coat-of-arms) flying above the legislature or governor's palace. Mexico has a grand total of 96 cities drawn, 56 animals, and hundreds of other different features. It was a true game-changer.

The Northeast, Midwest, and southern Ontario/Québec. Again, drawing the ocean is going to transform this map - this includes the Great Lakes. However, it will be the last thing I draw... so for now we just have to imagine!

Another region with my hand for scale. Things are getting very, very minute around the Caribbean and Central America.

The touch-up process is well underway, and is an extensive approach. Pen has been removed with a scalpel in order to proceed without restriction.

Southeast United States (before The Bahamas were drawn).

To put the real-life size of the artwork in perspective, here are my fingers for scale. Drawing at this scale is the only way I can actually have the entire continent on a 59x57inch piece of paper.
Picture
Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. The fifth-largest island in the world, but only the second-largest island on the map. Greenland is yet to be drawn, but is the largest remaining land mass I have left. I love drawing Arctic landscapes - especially for the interesting colours and textures that are available.
Picture
Alaska, Yukon, and the western Northwest Territories.
Picture
Québec, Newfoundland/Labrador, the Maritimes.
Picture
Nunavut. A vast wilderness that was an absolute pleasure to draw. It is now a dream of mine to visit Auyuittuq National Park.
So again, feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about the content. There is a lot there, and nothing has been included without a good reason, so I'll be happy to have a conversation about it. Also, if there's anything crucial I've missed, then do let me know. Along with the ocean and lakes, the last stage of drawing this project will be touching up - especially along the western United States where the project began. If your town is missing its most iconic feature, then please let me know! It may just get included during final touch-ups.
