My mother Macalyne, my grandmother Brownie, and my uncle George. Christmas that year meant the end of the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II -- a momentous time in our nation's history. This photo, for me, represents all the goodness and simplicity, and the uncertainty, of those days. We have come a long way since then, for better or worse.

Those two kids grew up to be perhaps the most influential speech pathologist in the world as a professor at Vanderbilt and Purdue (Mom), and a surgeon, professor, and President of the American Trauma Society (George). Fairly successful parenting by my grandparents, I'd say.

My great-grandfather's shop in Southampton UK, with my grandfather in the doorway. Grandfather was born in 1890, he doesn't look older than 15 here, so I guess the picture was taken around 1905 or slightly before. I remember the shop in the 1950's when grandfather and his two spinster sisters had taken over and it looks just like it did then. View full size.

This was taken in an orange grove so it's likely in Southern California where I found this Kodachrome slide in a thrift store. Now instead of actual citrus groves, we have shopping centers named after citrus groves. The slide is captioned "Uncle Albert Thanksgiving 1948." View full size.
