Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Vintage photos of:

My mother Macalyne, my grandmother Brownie, and my uncle George. Christmas that year meant the end of the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II -- a momentous time in our nation's history. This photo, for me, represents all the goodness and simplicity, and the uncertainty, of those days. We have come a long way since then, for better or worse.
Those two kids grew up to be perhaps the most influential speech pathologist in the world as a professor at Vanderbilt and Purdue (Mom), and a surgeon, professor, and President of the American Trauma Society (George). Fairly successful parenting by my grandparents, I'd say.

Or 9:20, or maybe 7:15...
Another Kodachrome view of Santa's Village near Running Springs California. I'm estimating it's around 1958 based on vehicles seen in other slides from this set.
I should note that this view of SV is from a completely different set of slides than the one I posted previously; it was a popular local attraction in the 1950's. View full size.

It's the Tuesday before Christmas, which means it's time for a hallowed holiday tradition here at Shorpy: The Office Xmas Party! Which has been going on for 91 years now. Will Clarence in Sales ever get up the nerve to ask out Hermione from Accounting? Is there gin in that oilcan? Ask the bear.
Washington, D.C., 1925. "Western Electric Co. group." There are enough little dramas playing out here to keep the forensic partyologists busy until Ground Hog Day. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.

My great-grandfather's shop in Southampton UK, with my grandfather in the doorway. Grandfather was born in 1890, he doesn't look older than 15 here, so I guess the picture was taken around 1905 or slightly before. I remember the shop in the 1950's when grandfather and his two spinster sisters had taken over and it looks just like it did then. View full size.

This was taken in an orange grove so it's likely in Southern California where I found this Kodachrome slide in a thrift store. Now instead of actual citrus groves, we have shopping centers named after citrus groves. The slide is captioned "Uncle Albert Thanksgiving 1948." View full size.

Facilities include a vintage Wedgewood range in this cabin in Running Springs, California, also seen here and here. One side of a Stereoscopic Kodachrome slide found in a thrift store. View full size.

"Sep 70" is the only information on this slide I found in a Southern California thrift store. View full size.
