Magnus Carlsen blunders at Wijk and puts world No1 ranking under threat — 28-Jan-17, theguardian.com, play chess online
Magnus Carlsen, the world chess champion, made the most embarrassing blunder of his career at Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee last weekend, missing a chance for a simple virtually forced mate in three moves, all of them rook checks. That game was drawn and the next day he lost after a series of errors. His lead in the official rankings, which the 26-year-old Norwegian says he prizes even more than the global crown, has shrunk drastically and is threatened by two American rivals. This weekend’s crucial games at Wijk and at Tradewise Gibraltar could therefore be a defining moment for Carlsen. Only seven chess players, starting with the legendary Bobby Fischer, have been No1 since the official Fide list was instituted in 1971 and Carlsen’s tenure of the top spot has been unbroken since July 2011. However, in his ...
Scientists call for crackdown on doping in chess as players may be taking performance-enhancing ... — 27-Jan-17, telegraph.co.uk, play chess online
Scientists have called for a crackdown on doping in chess after it emerged that players may be taking performance-enhancing substances. A study has for the first time identified two stimulants that significantly boost a chess player's endurance and ability to concentrate during a match. Neuroenhancers do not enhance the quality of thinking and decision-making... but improve the ability or willingness to spend more time on a decision. Meanwhile, 1,500 strong chess players were contacted to ask about the prevalence of drug use in the game. Researchers are yet to reveal findings of the survey, but say they now have some idea of how much the two drugs are used by chess players. The main study, published in a leading journal, was carried out by researchers from several German universities and the University of Stockholm, who ...
Chess Champions and Their Queens — 21-Jan-17, huffingtonpost.com, play chess online
When Magnus Carlsen sacrificed his Queen against the Russian challenger Sergey Karjakin last month in New York, it won him not only the world title match, but it was the most brilliant final move of any world chess championship in history. It will be hard to match. Chess players are always attracted to Queen sacrifices. They symbolize victory of mind over matter, a desire to do more with less. Some Queen sacrifices are models of efficiency and lead to checkmates; others take advantage of positional deficiencies and bring mysterious twists into chess. Some are waiting to be discovered, stay behind the curtain and never show up. It is always special when these sacrifices are played in games of strong chess players. The man in the Barong Tagalog, a ceremonial Philippine shirt, is Wesley So. He won the Grand Chess Tour that ...
Wesley So at top of Wijk standings going into final weekend rounds — 21-Jan-17, theguardian.com, play chess online
America’s world No3, Wesley So, leads Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee with 4.5/6 going into the weekend rounds, with the world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen, half a point behind. Their individual encounter has already happened, a bloodless draw in the opening round. On Saturday Carlsen meets the Netherlands’ Anish Giri, who has the highest draw quotient among elite grandmasters, so the game to watch will be So against Pavel Eljanov from Ukraine who led early and still shares second place with Carlsen. England’s Gawain Jones has made a splendid start in the B group and currently shares the lead on 4.5/6 with Marcus Ragger after outplaying the Austrian in fine style in the sixth round. Jones would be the sole leader but for his blunder against Ilia Smirin of Israel featured in this week’s puzzle. Pushing a pawn one square in ...
Absence of rivals means Magnus Carlsen can aim for supremacy at Wijk — 14-Jan-17, theguardian.com, play chess online
The most famous chess tournament on the planet, Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, starts its 2017 edition this weekend with the first round free and live to watch online from 12.30pm on Saturday. Its central theme will be Magnus Carlsen’s attempt to win by a clear margin and so reinforce the 26-year-old world chess champion’s ambitions to establish himself as the best player of all time ahead of the legends Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. Carlsen has a good opportunity because three of his major chess rivals, the world No2, Fabiano Caruana, and the dangerous Hikaru Nakamura from the US as well as France’s world No5, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, have all preferred to play at Tradewise Gibraltar, which starts on 24 January and is cementing its reputation as the best organised and strongest open chess tournament. The Norwegian still ...
