Here is an example that shows the issue:
http://www.geocodezip.com/v3_Google_examples_icon-complexA.html

There are supposed to be four markers on that map, only one displays.  Get this error in Chrome:
v3_Google_examples_icon-complexA.html:28
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'width' of undefined

Setting optimized to false fixes the problem:

IE8 gives:

Error: 'undefined' is null or not an object

on something deep inside the API.

There appears to be a bug when using a shadow image that doesn't exist.
