I was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. Since that time, I have lived in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Maryland, San Diego, and now Utah. I once spoke Russian well and German poorly, but both are very rusty; try me if you want.
I graduated as political science valedictorian from Brigham Young University in 2004 and earned and my MA (2006) and PhD (2008) at the University of California, San Diego. My research deals broadly with the roles that governors and legislatures play in producing policy in the American states. My CV is available here
.
My wife, Janelle, is a full-time mom, part-time harpist, and all-time rockstar. We have three boys, born in 2006, 2009, and 2012. My boys' awesomeness defies description. (So does Janelle's.)
When I'm not in my office or wrangling my boys, you can usually find me wandering the mountains. Actually, usually you can't. That's sort of the point of going there. I'm happy hiking in all conditions—there's no bad weather, just bad gear.
Email usually finds me best, but please allow a few days for a reply. Students are welcome to drop by my office.
