Western European Investments in Security Technologies will be Driven by Banking, Manufacturing and Professional Services Through 2020, says IDC

MILAN, Italy, November 1, 2016 The first Worldwide Semiannual Security Spending Guide from International Data Corporation (IDC ) confirms strong growth in European companies' security-related spending across hardware, software, and services. The Western European market will grow from $19.5 billion in 2016 to $26.4 billion in 2020, generating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8% over the five-year forecast period, more than twice as fast as the overall IT market in the region. The new spending guide expands on IDC's previous security forecasts by offering greater detail on spending by geography, industry, company size band, and technology.

EMEA PC Market Stabilized in 2016Q3 Thanks to Strong Commercial Notebook Shipments in Western Europe, says IDC

LONDON, October 21, 2016 PC shipments in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) performed above expectations, reaching 17.9 million units and posting a 3.3% YoY decrease in 2016Q3, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). Notebook shipments increased by 0.7%, supported by interest in new thin and light solutions from Western European enterprises and by political stabilization in the Middle East and Africa.

Consolidated Expansion of New Form Factors Predicted in the Second Half of 2016 and Beyond, says IDC

LONDON, October 3, 2016 According to the latest IDC forecast, detachables, convertibles, and ultraslim notebooks will continue their expansion and are expected to account for approximately 40% of the total PC and tablet market in Western Europe by 2020. IDC projects continued double-digit YoY growth in 2016 across all three form factors, with ultraslims expected to grow 14.2%, convertibles 20.7%, and detachables to near double with over 80% growth in 2016 YoY. This only partly offsets the decline of the more traditional form factors, such as traditional notebooks, traditional desktops, or slate tablets, as the overall market performance will remain negative. IDC forecasts a 3.7% decrease of PC and tablet shipment in the second half of 2016 (compared with 2015H2). Overall the market is expected to contract 6% YoY in 2016.

LONDON, September 9, 2016 Figures recently released by International Data Corporation (IDC) as part of its annual Point of Sale (POS) Printer Tracker program show new momentum behind POS printers in Western Europe. According to IDC, after a sluggish trend in 2014, approximately 810,000 units were shipped in 2015 representing a 4.5% leap compared to the previous year. The trend was patchy by geography, however, with double-digit growth in Benelux and Southern Europe, buoyant results in German speaking countries (DACH), and negative trends in France and the U.K.

Consumer Ultraslim and Detachable Uptake Revitalizes PC and Tablet Market in Western Europe, Says IDC

LONDON, August 22, 2016 — According to the latest results published by International Data Corporation (IDC), ultraslim notebooks and detachables posted positive results in the second quarter of 2016, growing 8.6% and 192.3% YoY respectively. Approximately one in every five PCs shipped in Western Europe this quarter was an ultraslim notebook, while one in four tablets shipped was a detachable in both the consumer and commercial segments. The results show good traction for these devices in spite of market challenges, as the penetration of both form factors continued to progress. Fewer Machines for Your Euros? Exchange Rate Impact to be Put in Technology Context, says IDC

As the euro and dollar almost reach parity, coping with exchange rate fluctuations is turning into a major challenge for the IT industry. Components purchases are usually in dollars and consequently all hardware manufacturers have to face the strong currency volatility seen in the recent months. This results in vendors and resellers accepting revenue losses in dollars in some cases, while customers have to bear the brunt of price increases. The channel tried to limit its exposure or delay the impact, but this actually added pressure to margins. Reducing current market difficulties to currency impact would be an error, however, as the effect of exchange rates is only one of the factors affecting the IT market and should be taken in context with other trends in each technology area

EMEA PC Market Contracts in Second Quarter, Constrained by High Inventory, Currency Fluctuations, and Weak Demand, Says IDC

PC shipments in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) reached 17.2 million units in the second quarter of 2015, posting a 21.6% decline year-on-year, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). As expected, the market continued to suffer from unfavorable exchange rates which led to higher price points and weaker demand, with the decline deepened by the adverse year-on-year comparison with a very strong first half of 2014, when Windows XP related renewals boosted shipments across the region. In addition, high inventories translated into lower shipments in this transition quarter, as the industry focuses on stock depletion in preparation for the Windows 10 launch later this summer.

Sales of 802.11ac-compliant access points contributed 46.3% to enterprise AP market value in Q1 2015, showing rapid proliferation of 802.11ac-compliant devices in the enterprise segment, underpinning the demand for high throughput speeds and mobility in general. In the consumer segment, sales of 802.11ac-compliant devices contributed 23.7% to overall market value.

IDC Predicts a Return to Growth in EMEA Thin Client Market

The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) thin client market faced a severe contraction in Q1 2015. The shipments declined at -10.2% year-on-year, and resulted in 438 thousand units shipped, according to the EMEA Quarterly Enterprise Client Device Tracker published by global IT market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC). "Windows XP played a slippery trick with the thin client market in Western Europe hotting up early renewals and new purchases in 2014. Our analysis suggests that the market overshot its long-term growth trend by about 5-7 percentage points," says Oleg Sidorkin, senior research analyst at IDC. "As a result, in the beginning of 2015 the market faced a shortage of new projects and a weak demand. Nevertheless, as the impact of the demand shock fades away, the market will return to the long-term growth by the end of the year."
