    Editing thread from guru 🙌🏻

    One thing I see a lot as an editor are characters with "negative" goals. By that I mean they're mainly trying to avoid something undesirable, rather than striving to achieve something new/desirable.

    I empathise with this so much. 10 years of writing to be published, then I got published and fell off a cliff into an abyss of darkness. On an upward curve now but it’s been a rough couple of years.

    Often the Twitter timeline of writers tends to be be overly positive, and that's not a bad thing… But I want to get real for a few minutes about writing life, whatever stage you are at. It's not always positive and things don't always go as we want them.

    This thread ROCKS. Luck has nothing to do with it. It’s hard work, belief when you’re the only one cheering and years of unseen graft.

    So: I try to keep it light on here and not bare my soul - that is for me and me alone. But I've been on the receiving end of some rather snide remarks from some unexpected sources suggesting how "lucky" I am that my books are doing okay. Here's what I have to say (there's a lot):

    Last night this demon did a vanishing act. Teen & husband out in the rain for AGES calling her. I shook a food pouch, hollered her name & out she popped from INSIDE the house. Nothings ever lost till mum can’t find it. Happy catty cats & ur hoomans.

    Going through my plot plan making sure the reveals and twists are evenly spread through the ACT 1, ACT 2 and then coming quicker towards the end. Doing my beat sheet massively helped with this!

    POC already face so many hurdles. Don’t let the noise from privileged strangers prevent you from telling the story you need to tell. The story you needed most growing up. Because I promise you, someone out there DESPERATELY wants to read it.
