    Thread: my piece and the speech I gave this week on automation and the future of work (link: ) - in particular, my comments on Universal Basic Income - seem to have sparked some debate. Good - we need far more debate on the future of work /1

    I have grave reservations about Universal Basic Income and agree with arguments already put by others such as and the IPPR's in their "Universal Basic Mistake" here . But... /2

    It is not clear that the 4th industrial revolution will lead to a net reduction in jobs so we must be v.careful in assuming it will and in building policy around that assumption. I don't think UBI is the answer - happy to be persuaded otherwise! /10

    In my view decent, secure, well paid work is still one of the primary motors of reducing poverty, reducing inequality, improving people's wellbeing+ spreading opportunity. This is my primary motivation in this debate on Universal Basic Income, as it is for most engaged in it /9

    On reducing poverty, the has produced a policy paper that found that a universal basic income would fail to reduce poverty levels in advanced economies /8

    Interestingly YouGov polling illustrates some support for Universal Basic Income but ironically most people want to pay for it by cutting welfare support - somewhat of a contradiction. /7

    . cites Barack Obama saying UBI will be a matter of debate for years. I met with Obama's Council of Economic Advisors when they were looking at the concept - they decided against adopting it for several reasons not least the exorbitant cost of doing it properly /6
