Subreddit display names are one the things we are already thinking about.

Bots will be able to update the contents of widgets via the API, like they currently do with the sidebar of r/baseball.

A lot of the features that we are looking at adding are based on current features that mods implement with CSS hacks. From your list, there are only two that aren't currently going to be editable in the new system:

  • Animated elements, such as the nice scrolling header on /r/DragonMaid
  • Custom mouse cursors

(and I could be open us supporting some sort of animated header eventually). The full-on craziness of r/ooer won't be reproducible. We want to keep the basic structure of a subreddit consistent.

From the announcement post:

  • It’s web-only. Increasing users are viewing Reddit on mobile (over 50%), where CSS is not supported. We’d love for you to be able to bring your spice to phones as well.
  • CSS is a pain in the ass: it’s difficult to learn; it’s error-prone; and it’s time consuming.
  • Some changes cause confusion (such as changing the subscription numbers).
  • CSS causes us to move slow. We’d like to make changes more quickly. You’ve asked us to improve things, and one of the things that slows us down is the risk of breaking subreddit CSS (and third-party mod tools).

All I can see coming is a new site look with a setting for the header image, maybe a setting for background colors

We definitely intend to have more customization options than that. The redesign is mainly focused on keeping the layout of the page consistent between subreddits.

those widgets mentioned in the op which will probably get no support on mobile apps.

Moving to the widget system will mean we can support them in the apps. Right now, all functionality is added via css and markdown in the subreddit sidebar. Currently mobile apps don't know how to treat the big blob of sidebar text.

I suck at reading. Will look into the web property id idea and see if that is something we could potentially use in the short-term.

This number continue to be thrown around but there have been no tools for mods to be able to analyze traffic at that level and no traffic reports have been shared to mods.

I am aware how much this sucks. Rebuilding the subreddit traffic pages is one of the things we want to do in the redesign. However, it has some technical complications we need to address first - See u/Drunken_Economist's comment here for more details

How do we get on board with being an alpha tester /u/powerlanguage?

I'll post a sign up thread to r/modnews in the coming months.

Is there a plan to implement emotes?

Yup. This is one of the features we want to build on the new site.

Can we expect spoiler tags for comments before we lose CSS?

Yup. Agree that this is a must-have. We want to support this natively so it works on all platforms.

I think they mean the way the left rail of a comment becomes the expando toggle. This means you can quickly collapse an entire thread whilst reading a child comment.

I don't see how this will actually be considered a working replacement? For example if 50 subreddits use CSS to add extra buttons like "Read FAQ" below "Submit a new link" but the other 4000+ subreddits don't, would the admins actually give this dev time to implement?

In cases like this, we'd implement a 'button' widget where a moderator can decide the style and content of the button, as well as where it links. If it isn't appropriate for some subreddits, they just won't include it. The goal is to build a modular system that we can easily add to. E.g. If it turns out a bunch of subreddits want a countdown timer widget natively supported, we can add it.

We also lose the ability to control and improve UX, considering the admins have been exceptionally slow to improve any UX (even something like link flair).

General UX improvements are a big part of the redesign and we are doing a bunch of user testing focused on this. Our approach here is that we should own UX and users should expect layout consistency across subreddits. We'll of course be accepting feedback on the overall layout when we enter public testing.

We can you help you make the conversion when the time comes.

Will there be a widget to make it easier to include images to link to other sister subreddits? Also, /r/marvelstudios, the community loves the sidebar with the movie logos. Will that be going away?

A sidebar image widget is one of the first things we are looking at including.

Would you say it would be easy for a subreddit to convert their style to the new system without losing much

It depends on the level of customization. As u/spez mentions, we will offer help on making the conversion.

What about CSS based dropdown menus and such? Will we lose them too?

A customizable dropdown nav menu will be included.

Yup, image flair is a cool feature for adding unique identity within subreddits and we want to continue to support it. It should definitely be waaaay easier to configure. Haven't made any decisions on animation yet, though we will probably start without to keep things simple.

My concern is that it'll be decided to do away with the flairs and remove all the functionality and uses they have

We intend to keep both user flair and post flair. And want to support their current uses (as indicated in my previous comment).

Compare /r/Overwatch's /about/rulespage to /r/Videos' - they are exactly the same if you ignore the headers and sidebar.

If the CSS replacement we build ends up with all subreddits looking like this then I think we will have failed.

Ahh, markdown spoilers. We're working on getting them supported natively too. Can't promise the obfuscation and reveal will be quite as juicy as that though.

each image flair will be associated with individual image file

Yep, we're thinking something like that. Image flair is definitely something we want to continue to support.

[–]powerlanguage[A] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah - there is definitely some nuance to this. The r/all post flair is another example where moderators add some metadata to a post that isn't necessarily a tag you'd want to filter by. I hear your concern and think this is definitely solvable.

For example, instead of coding ourselves how we want things to look, it will be more 'build-a-bear' style where we just choose the pieces and you put it together?

Yes. We also want to make that so first time mods can tweak a few high-level settings and see good results. And more advanced folk can dive in and have more granular control over the level of customization.

'build-a-bear'

Is this a common phrase?

Do you mean comment their comment collapsing functionality? 'Cause that is sweet and something we are looking at incorporating into the redesign.
