Literature of Costa Rica: September 2016 by AutoModerator in books

[–]fernleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"God was looking the other way" by Jose Leon Sanchez. Or "La Isla De Los Hombres Solos" (The lonely men island) in the Spanish original. Is arguably the Papillon of latin-america, a terrific book if you can find it. Perhaps the most internationally famous biography to ever come out of Costa Rica. Written in a naturalistic style by an ex convict depicts the 30 the years he spent in the CRs devil's island. A classic!

Does anyone have any experience with Investors Visas? by Doncuneo in IWantOut

[–]fernleon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just helped a family member arrange for his son to get an eb5 investor visa/ green card with a very reputable lawyer (with 100% success rate) here in the US. The cost of the investment is $500k plus another $50k for the administration and legal fees for the regional investor hub so that you don't have to open a company yourself but you invest the money in a large pre-established pool of investors. The money should be refunded after 5 or so years but you get your visa right away. I investigated this and if you have the money it seems to be the most reliable way to get a green card.

A mi ciudad nativa

During winter you can go skiing to Gstaad, St. Moritz... if you don't like to fly you are less than a day train ride to Madrid, Rome, Florence, Berlin, Bruges, Venice, Vienna, ... A pressure cooker. Imo much better than slow cookers. You can cook just about anything in a pressure cooker, from vegetables and grains to meat and fish. It significantly reduces the cook time for foods. Tough cuts of beef come out from the pressure cooker moist and tender while the slow cooker meat tastes dried out and overcooked.

Medellin is a wonderful city with perfect year round weather, full of friendly people, great food, inexpensive.... they love Americans and Spaniards.

The Department of State has this to say about Colombia now: “Tens of thousands of U.S. citizens safely visit Colombia each year for tourism, business, university studies and volunteer work. Security in Colombia has improved significantly in recent years, including in tourist and business travel destinations such as Bogotá, Cartagena,Barranquilla, Medellín and Cali. "

Colombia just landed the No. 8 spot in International Living’s 2015 Index of the World’s Best Places to Retire, No. 2 in South America.

"According to an AmericaEconomia magazine survey, of the 42 best hospitals in 12 Latin American countries, half are in Colombia. And, Colombia is the country with the largest number of healthcare institutions in the top 10."

[–]fernleon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm an expert... Spaniards (like the french or Italians) are mostly white europeans. Latin Americans are not a race but an etnic group, however a good portion of latinos are of mixed origin i.e. American Indians mixed with Spaniards or black etc. this is why they get confused with a race when they are not. For example George Lopez is mostly American Indian, Sofia Vergara is mostly spanish, both Latinos, buy very diferent races.

[–]fernleon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, these are not books in the public domain. I've read that currently few publishers are enrolled as of now so the selection is limited. However, if a book matches and belongs to this group, there are specific instructions that require you to write your name in ink on the inside page (next to the ISBN?) and send them a picture if you want to redeem the ebook. In exchange they get your data and taste in books for marketing purposes. The reviews aren't good for what I've seen.

Being rich (or middle class) in certain countries is better than others, no matter where the money comes from. You are forgetting about culture, weather, friendliness, priorities, history, food quality, touristic atractives, etc. I'd rather be rich in San Miguel de Allende than in St. Louis Missouri any day of the week. Even if I had to get a paycut to become "Mexican" rich. Most of my middle class cousins in Colombia live much better than me here in the Midwest and probably make 1/3 of what I do. They all have farms, maids, work less, have more vacations, cheaper food, Healthcare, etc. Yes there are trade offs like more crime etc... But if you have a good salary in those countries life quality and happiness is much better. If not you are fucked there more than here, however.

18M Egypt/UAE > US/EU by Supernovae7 in IWantOut

[–]fernleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding question 1, it all depends on what school you are going to. Your university should be able to tell you what international (or domestic) accreditation credentials the school holds (it's like a diploma, but for a school). That is why you pay them. What good is am unaccredited school? . See example for an engineering school in Egypt that is only one of the two accredited in the US: http://schools.aucegypt.edu/sse/ess/NCEES/Pages/NCEESFAQ.aspx Also some countries might require accreditations depending on the profession, others not. This also goes by companies, your degree might not be acredited in a country, but a company might still be willing to hire you and sponsor you for a working visa and pay for you to move. Try to get an internship in a reputable western company in Egypt before you graduate.

For question 2 see this great link: http://lifehacker.com/will-a-certification-really-help-me-get-a-better-job-633263230

Just try to get an international certification in your field. Sometimes worth more than a degree!!!
