  • Hide What is a data compromise?

    A data compromise is an organized theft of ATM, debit card or credit card information. When this happens, it’s usually because of a data breach on the part of a merchant or a merchant third-party processor, computer theft, stolen storage tapes or company insiders working for a merchant or a merchant’s contractor.

  • Show Where and when was the card information compromised?

    When a data compromise affecting your accounts occurs, Bank of America receives information from multiple outside sources such as Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express® or law enforcement agencies. Due to the sensitivity of the information, detail specific to the breach is not disclosed to the bank. Therefore, we are unable to provide the name of the merchant or where the data breach has occurred.

  • Show Is it safe to use my new card?

    Yes. We're replacing your card as a safety measure to help ensure that your account information is protected. The new card has a new account number. Please activate your new card and continue to use it as you normally would.

  • Show What can I do to protect my information?
    • Always know where your card is. If you misplace it, call us immediately so we can block the card from use.
    • Regularly monitoring your account activity is the best way to help detect if you have been a victim of fraud. Bank of America's Online Banking service allows you to access your account activity at your convenience and signing up for electronic statements may also help reduce your risk of mail fraud.
    • If you receive your statements in the mail, review your statement as soon as possible after it is delivered and immediately report any fraudulent transactions
    • For added protection, you can set up Online Banking Alerts that notify you about important activity in your accounts, which can help identify fraud quickly. Learn more about Online Banking Alerts
  • Show What if I think my credit, debit or ATM card number is being fraudulently used?

    Review your recent transactions and ensure they are all yours. Sometimes a single unauthorized charge may be an error and can be resolved quickly by contacting the merchant. If you see transactions you do not recognize, call the number on the back of your card immediately to report it.

  • Show Do I need to close my other Bank of America accounts?

    It is not necessary at this time to close other accounts. As always, Bank of America continues to monitor your account for unusual activity.

  • Show Is my rewards program impacted?

    No. Your rewards will transfer over to your new account with no impact.

Report suspicious activity

  • In your email:
    To report a suspicious email that uses Bank of America's name, forward it to us immediately at mailto: [email protected].
  • On your statement:
    To report fraudulent activity on your Bank of America account, call 800.432.1000.
  • In texts:
    “SMShing” and Smishing are like phishing but sent via SMS text messages to access information. Report attempts at mailto: [email protected].
  • By phone:
    “Vishing” uses the features of Voice over IP (VoIP) phones to steal personal and financial information. Report it at mailto: [email protected].
