    Cannes is decided by a jury of 9 people. The Beguiled was DOA as soon as it was released: good-ish but not superlative reviews, okay box office. Decent, but not enough passion from anyone to carry it from summer through awards season.

    Jolie and Blige are stars, the Golden Globes is notoriously biased in favour of big names (they once nominated her for The Tourist!) Netflix bias, at least for the main categories, is still very real.

    Wonder Woman was never going to happen in directing. I've seen people compare WW to Mad Max, but Mad Max had way more critical love and there is a huge bias against superhero movies. WB is frankly doing a great job campaigning Patty so far, but it's a crowded year.

    I'm more worried about the utter lack of Wonder Woman nominations. Surely Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot deserved at least an acknowledgment of their good work? they're DCEU's only success. Warner Bros. should be campaigning harder for them.

    Also re: snubs Patty Jenkins, Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola and Dee Rees aren't snubs. They're all talented women, but none except Rees had the critical support needed to get a directing nom and Rees was hampered by Netflix's inexpert campaigning.

    That said, the Oscars are notoriously unfriendly towards women directors (only 4 nominated and 1 win in 89 years). I won't be surprised if she is nominated and I won't be surprised if she misses out.

    People worried about Greta Gerwig's snub for Best Director: GGs rarely go 5/5 in the directing categories with the Oscars, she is still very much in contention for a nom.

    Must read thread of Anna Biller talking about the ways she was artistically undermined. When I saw The Love Witch I was impressed during the credits to see how much Anna had done herself, even more impressed now that I realize the conditions she was working under.

    Fun fact: most of the crew on THE LOVE WITCH (with a few exceptions) hated what we were shooting and did not even see the movie after it was done.
