Canada is a big frickin’ country, with talent and skills spread out, and it costs a bit to bring everyone to one place. But if a project is worth doing, it’s worth spending 1% of its budget on travel to make sure the project is kept on track as effectively as possible.

We’ve all had experiences where more got done in 20 minutes in person with a person than in a week of emails/DMs/voice mails.

The benefits of face-to-face meetings is *especially* important at the start, when the project is making fundamental decisions of priorities, directions, and approach.

But every once or (better) twice a year, we need to get most of the team in one place to align the team, make some big decisions, and get some work done together.

To a lazy journalist, paying $5M for people to work in their offices sounds plausible, but $50K for those people to occasionally work together sounds extravagant.

But of this ~$5M grant, the <1% of the budget that was allocated to travel - that would bring the team together in one place occasionally - was cut by the funding agency, an agency that worries about ridiculous articles like this story.

I’m working on a national research software project that takes advantage of - that *requires* - a distributed national team to succeed.

Lazy, cynical, clickbaity “news” stories like this one have ensured that the $5M national research project I’m working on took longer to take off than it should have. This nonsense hurts Canadian research.

I would *love* to read a paper that summarizes the various models in the wild for providing highly skilled scientific technical support groups, with examples & tradeoffs. Failing that I’d even be willing to help put one together. Does one exist, or is anyone working on one?

So most of the time, the _driver_ is not paying attention. If a driver is incapable of recognizing a huge red streetcar stopping and its old doors swinging open (as was the case here) and stopping in time, they have no business operating a motor vehicle.
