Comparison of core memory and a microSD card. Each ferrite ring holds 1 bit so 64 bits of core is about the same size as 64 GB of flash. The core memory is a 4K module from an IBM 1401 mainframe (1959). Photo suggested by .

We powered up a tube module from a 1950s IBM 705 mainframe. It contains 5 signal debounce circuits. CuriousMarc's video shows it in operation, cleaning up pulses:

  3. ಡಿಸೆಂ 24,2017

The core memory and the power supply failed on a 1960s 1401 at . We got it running again just in time to punch an 80-column holiday card. I describe the multi-week debugging effort:

Holiday lights: A tube module from the 1950s powered up. This module used 8 vacuum tubes (dual triodes) and was a component of IBM's powerful 705 business computer. The filament inside a tube was hot enough to produce an orange glow.

Thanks to for suggesting this holiday card design.

Some people asked about the Xerox Alto's power consumption. About 370W for computer, 60W for disk, 70W for CRT display, measured with a Kill-A-Watt meter.

I punched an 80-column holiday card on the vintage IBM 1401's card reader/punch using the "column binary" feature to punch all those holes. Based on a tweet from someone whose name I can't find.

Punch card computing: I help repair an IBM keypunch from the 1960s that wouldn't punch numbers. Inside, a complex mechanical mechanism determines which holes to punch.

  9. ಡಿಸೆಂ 9,2017

I made a Christmas card on an IBM 1401 mainframe from the 1960s by writing an assembly program on punch cards.

  10. ಡಿಸೆಂ 7,2017

I used differential cryptanalysis to figure out the checksum algorithm for an air conditioner remote control. Overkill, but it got the job done. Details:

Hands-on with the : a tiny new Linux computer with powerful built-in microcontrollers. I demonstrate how to start it up, use the I/O pins, attach an accelerometer, and set up WiFi.

Ethernet was invented for the Xerox Alto in 1973. I debug the Ethernet board from a vintage Alto and fix a bad chip.

  13. ನವೆಂ 6,2017

I discussed reverse engineering chips in this podcast.

Spoiler: the machine is an IBM 405 "Alphabetic Accounting Machine" that generated reports from punched cards.

A quick look at the vintage Xerox Alto's WYSIWYG editor and fancy font support, and how it inspired Steve Jobs.

I ran Smalltalk-76 running on the vintage Xerox Alto: the start of the desktop GUI and object-oriented programming.

  18. ಅಕ್ಟೋ 14,2017

Fixing the revolutionary Xerox Alto, we find a tiny light bulb in the power supply made the display fail strangely.

A vintage RAM chip turns out to be counterfeit. Inside I find a Touch-Tone phone dialer! Details:
