Hello, I am a writer and I need a job. I clean up nice. This is my résumé:

This is what happens when shadow fascists buy a paper: they fire everybody with a mind, replace those people with the author of erotic short story "Chairman of the Broads," spit on all the books in the library, then for a nightcap they go burn money in front of some poor people.

LA Weekly is killing itself as fast and as obscenely as it can. The latest proof:

Their new album is one of my favorites of 2017. "How am I to get my rest / the house I built is burning" is a hell of a chorus.

The Turnpike Troubadours don't get enough love for being one of the best roots groups in the game right now. (Thanks as is generally the case to for hipping me to them.)

The internet of micro-personalization and personal branding and perfectly composed pictures of a million curated lives has become, like most things that are theoretically cool, a late-capitalism tool of dehumanization.

Anyway, the moral is this: break away. Go out and find things on your own. The internet doesn't work anymore. Commerce is burning it down.

Remember like 12 years ago, where you would get online and find out there's some guy in France with a bunch of weird rocks, or that there were all these DB Cooper copycats? That kind of stuff isn't encouraged anymore. You can't make it trend. There aren't the right keywords.

I'm not advocating an agrarian society, I just think the way people currently use the internet needs to change, and deeper, the way corporations manipulate the internet needs to be extremely regulated. The way they control what's put in front of you is evil.

And frankly it'd probably be better to find out about the big one the way we used to, by somebody calling us and telling us to turn on the TV, or seeing a paper at the grocery store or something. Just so we process it in a more visceral, human way.

It's hard not to think I'd be smarter and my dopamine would be dispersed more correctly if I started only using my computer once a week about, oh, a year ago. The micro-explosions of the news cycle put everyone in this holding pattern of waiting for "the big one."

  12. 18 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

The rise of the "tailored for you" internet combined with how news is disseminated on social media has led to nothing but algorithmically-enforced tribalism and a million tiny little information bubbles. It turned online into a drug that gets you anxious and mad instead of high.

Dolly Parton does not receive adequate credit for being one of America's great songwriters

I just saw THEY LIVE for the first time, and it's incredibly prescient about class in America, but more importantly, Roddy Piper pretty much believed everything in the movie was real.

Anyway, it's pretty damn cool that Disney (still evil, doesn't make them less evil) put real directors on this franchise. It's just too bad Johnson couldn't direct the whole series. Abrams is a TV guy. It's in his bones.

Rogue One is the movie that got me onboard with Disney taking over Star Wars. I loved watching Darth Vader wasting people. It made me remember what it was like to viscerally enjoy Star Wars, watching it on the original VHS when I was 5 before Lucas heard about computers.

Saying something I never thought I'd say: I'm so amped for this new Star War that I may unplug from Twitter after it comes out until I can go see it in IMAX with the folks. This is the first Star War I've ever truly anticipated and it's a fun feeling.
