Now off to to talk about cycling & gender equity. Here are a couple of slides from my talk showing why building routes only for commute trips would be problematic in equity terms:

Annual commute trips per person (concentrated among men and under-60s)
Annual 'escort education' trips per person, 2016: concentrated among women aged 30-49.

    1. How many un-reported road injuries are there? Who is most affected? 2. Do drivers using resi streets put peds at greater risk than drivers using main roads? 3. Is ‘safety in numbers’ observed over time? 4. What kinds of roads have higher/lower injury risk for people cycling?

Confounding factors are often poorly separated (e.g. in many 'Safety in Numbers' studies) & there are few whole-network studies covering multiple route factors. Based on Open Access journal papers, I'll be covering the following 4 research questions tomorrow morning:

There's lots of research on *injuries* but less on *risk*, both as experienced by, and as posed to, others. Yet reducing *risk* is key: some of the worst places for walking or cycling may have relatively low injury numbers, as people are scared and avoid them.

First thing Thursday I'm launching new research on walking & cycling injury risk. I'll be sharing links to a report & articles, & a Twitter thread with some key points. E.g. why the 'safety in numbers' effect DOESN'T mean cycling will automatically get safer if uptake grows.
