    Homeland Security justifies separating children from parents because of "314 percent increase in adults showing up with kids that are not a family unit." The increase was from ~0.19% in 2017 to ~0.61% in 2018. Relative risks were never good to guide policy.

    The White House liked Nielsen's comment on that 314% so much that it tweeted it out. It was the main rationale Nielsen offered for the need to separate children from parents (and the primary rationale Sessions offered when he announced the policy).
