Did Officer Paul Tuozzolo do the right thing in sacrificing his life for a fellow police officer? Did he have a higher duty to protect his life so that he could continue to provide for his family?

I suppose more to the point would be this question: Is it better to be a live coward or a dead hero?

There are no easy answers to these questions, at least not in my mind.

I was never paid or expected to take a bullet for a co-worker. I have noticed, however, that some men do this even if they’re not police officers. Generally, these are white men who are hailed as heroes.

NEW YORK — The images were shocking of another police office shot violently on the streets of New York.

The suspect was a man who had 17 prior arrests. PIX11 covered the story extensively and three months later we sat down on-on-one with Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo who says Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo saved his life the day Tuozzolo was shot and killed.

“There is no reason why I’m here and he’s not except he saved my life,” said Kwo.

Tuozzolo took the lead that day to shield his colleagues. Kwo was shot in the leg.

“I definitely felt I had been shot, however at that moment my concern and my thoughts were on everyone else who was on that scene especially Paul.” Kwo said.

It’s been three months but the emotions are still raw.

“It’s hard to put into words all the range of emotions that went through my head and all of the officers at the scene that day,” Kwo said.

Commanding Officer Fausto Pichardo at the 43rd Precinct said discussed the pain of losing a friend and colleague.

“You take probably the most crucial seconds you will probably take after receiving that phone call and think about the families,” said Pichardo.

To help families get through tragedy, the NYPD developed the Employee Relations Section.

“We are therefor them always, we have the task of notifying families then helping them get to a new normal,” said Chief Thomas Burns. “No need is too big or small.”

NEW YORK — At least four people were arrested Thursday night after scuffling with police outside of an appearance by right-wing comedian Gavin McInnes at NYU, police sources say.

The NYU Anti-Fascists organized the event on Facebook titled “Disrupt Gavin McInnes at NYU.”

The co-founder of Vice was invited to speak on campus by the NYU College Republicans.

“Come to Kimmel, Rosenthal Pavilion to let NYU know that we will not stand for bigotry, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny on our campus,” the Facebook post read.

In December, McInnes launched a group called the Proud Boys. According to their Twitter account, the Twitter account’s description reads “Western chauvinist who refuses to apologize for creating the modern world.”

A scuffle broke out in front of the building between protesters and police. Police sources say at least four people have been arrested.

A photo uploaded to Twitter showed a “Make America Great Again” burning in front of the building.

Once McInnes was in the building, protesters followed and chanted as he tried to speak.

“Whose campus? Our campus,” the protesters chanted.

Protests erupted Wednesday night at UC Berkeley in California ahead of a planned appearance by right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos. Administrators ended up canceling the event two hours before the Breitbart editor’s speech.

More than 1,500 people gathered on the UC Berkeley campus tearing down metal barriers, setting fires and damaging construction of a new building. No arrests were made during those protests.

On CNN Thursday, UC Berkeley professor and former Democratic Secretary of Labor Robert Reich suggested the anti-Trump riots on campus were actually a right-wing plot to delegitimize liberals.

“I was there for part of last night, and I know what I saw and those people were not Berkeley students,” Reich said. “Those people were outside agitators. I have never seen them before.”

“There’s rumors that they actually were right-wingers. They were a part of a kind of group that was organized and ready to create the kind of tumult and danger you saw that forced the police to cancel the event,” Reich insisted. “So Donald Trump, when he says Berkeley doesn’t respect free speech rights, that’s a complete distortion of the truth.”

“You think it’s a strategy by [Milo Yiannopoulos] or right-wingers?” asked host Don Lemon.

“I wouldn’t bet against it,” Reich said. “I saw these people. They all looked very– almost paramilitary. They were not from the campus. I don’t want to say factually, but I’ve heard there was some relationship here between these people and the right-wing movement that is affiliated with Breitbart News.”

The outline shows how Bannon, years before he became a strategist for President Donald Trump and helped draft last week’s order restricting travel from seven mostly Muslim countries, sought to issue a warning about the threat posed by radical Muslims as well as their “enablers among us.” Although driven by the “best intentions,” the outline says, institutions such as the media, the Jewish community and government agencies were appeasing jihadists aiming to create an Islamic republic.

The eight-page draft, written in 2007 during Bannon’s stint as a Hollywood filmmaker, proposed a three-part movie that would trace “the culture of intolerance” behind sharia law, examine the “Fifth Column” made up of “Islamic front groups” and identify the American enablers paving “the road to this unique hell on earth.”

The outline, titled “Destroying the Great Satan: The Rise of Islamic Facism [sic] in America,” lists Bannon as the movie’s director, as well as its co-writer with his longtime writing partner Julia Jones. The title page includes the line “A Film By Stephen K. Bannon” in capital letters.

Jones, reached by The Washington Post, declined to discuss the contents of the document in detail but confirmed its authenticity. She added that it was essentially Bannon’s product.

“It was all his words,” Jones said.

A White House spokeswoman declined to comment. Bannon did not respond to several requests for comment.

The yearning of some Muslims to be free and prosper is understandable. The problem is that too many Muslims seek to impose their way of life on the West. We don’t need their lettering on any of our institutions, least of all our flag.

If you followed Donald Trump through the election season, you might remember a Tweet or statement about his having some interest in looking into the large number of LEGAL immigrants coming into the U.S. every year.

Liberal website Vox dug up an exchange between Trump adviser Steve Bannon and speechwriter Stephen Miller that condemns the negative effects of immigration on employment prospects and wages for Americans.

This excerpt is from a longer piece at Vox:

Trump’s public stance has seemingly always been to keep the “bad people” out and let the smart people in. But a conversation between Bannon and Miller from March 2016, on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily first resurfaced by the Washington Post, shows Bannon and Miller may both hold a more conservative view on immigration.

“Isn’t the beating heart of this problem, the real beating heart of it, of what we gotta get sorted here, not illegal immigration?” Bannon asked Miller. “As horrific as that is, and it’s horrific, don’t we have a problem? We’ve looked the other way on this legal immigration that’s kinda overwhelmed the country?”

Bannon goes on to decry the “oligarchs” of Silicon Valley and Washington and call the number of immigrants in the United States “scary.”

Miller’s response is affirmation: “The history of America is that an immigration-on period is followed by an immigration-off period,” he said.

As the power and sway of these two men becomes increasingly apparent, their conversation is worth revisiting. Here is the exchange:

BANNON: Where are we in the Trump campaign with the H-1B visas? Because we got the oligarchs down there, man, and they have got Karl Rove and literally hundreds of millions of dollars, and they are coming with one reason. And they are coming for unlimited ability to go throughout the world and have people come here and compete with kids coming out of engineering schools and IT jobs. If you are in your 40s and 50s right now, people will tell you, they haven’t had a raise in decades in IT. What was supposed to be a great career turned out not to be a great career. It’s because of these visas.

And now you got all the engineering schools full of people from South Asia and East Asia. And it’s not that I have any problem with those folks learning, but they are coming here to take these jobs. You have turned over the entire American education system — we have cut out art, we have cut out history, we have cut out music. Why have we done it? STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math. We have told every minority kid in this country, you got to excel at that. What happens? They get into graduate schools, they can’t get engineering degrees, they can’t get into graduate schools because there are all these foreign students, when they come out, they can’t get a job. And they are looking for these people like Ted Cruz and Donald Trump who talk about immigration and talk about H-1B visas to stand up for them against these oligarchs. So where are we on this?
