Level 3 #autonomoustrucks (AT) permit the driver to cede control of the vehicle to the technology on certain roadways under certain driving conditions, akin to autopilot on an aircraft. ATs come with significant technological, economic and personal benefits. A truck without a driver would no longer be subject to the current 11-hour daily drive time limit, which is in place to protect the public from overtired drivers. Therefore, a Level 5 truck could cover more mileage, haul more freight and ultimately generate more revenue per day than a truck driven by a human. #Trucking, which has lost market share on longer hauls in recent years to railroad intermodal service, could become more competitive again.
The largest trucking organization and an influential voice in Washington DC, the American Trucking Associations, is supportive of this technology because of the safety benefits and job security it ensures. Of course, as we look long-term at Level 5 #trucks, the labor issue will certainly arise as truck drivers are the most common job in 28 states. However, there are still some hurdles to overcome. Federal regulators and state lawmakers must provide an environment whereby the innovators and truckers can operate without hindrance. Liability and cyber-security/hacking concerns will need to be addressed by insurers and software developers.

Agriculture, trucking and other industries have all invested in the use of autonomous vehicles, and now mining has set its sights on the technology, with #Caterpillar and #Komatsu leading the charge. In #Australia, #RioTinto, #BHPBilliton, and #FortescueMetals Group have all incorporated self-driving vehicles in their operations, using unmanned trucks to haul ore.
Unlike a truck with a person behind the wheel, #autonomousvehicles don’t need to take lunch breaks, or go to the restroom - they can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with only minimal stops for refueling. #Selfdrivingtechnology can result in a 15% to 20% increase in production, as well as reducing costs in fuel and maintenance, according to a study by the International Institute for Sustainable Development. But as technology improves, the fear of job loss becomes a prominent issue. Just like in other transportation sectors where autonomous vehicles are eliminating the need for human drivers, mining companies’ self-driving fleets pose the same problem.

#RedHat announced (Jan 30) that it is acquiring privately held container Linux and #Kubernetes vendor #CoreOS, in a deal valued at $250m. CoreOS was founded in 2013 and had raised a total of $48m in funding. Both Red Hat and CoreOS are active contributors to the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration platform first created by Google, and Red Hat's OpenShift platform and CoreOS’ Tectonic platform were in competition with each other. CoreOS also has its own Linux distribution that was originally known as CoreOS Linux and was rebranded as Container Linux in December 2016.
Red Hat now sees CoreOS' products as being complementary with its own, stating 'CoreOS can further extend Red Hat’s leadership and influence in the Kubernetes upstream community and also bring new enhancements to Red Hat OpenShift around automated operations and management.'

At $250m, #RedHat paid a lofty premium for a company whose revenue was negligible. Beyond some revenue, what Red Hat really got was a team whose open source mindset is a near-perfect pattern match for Red Hat, not to mention a company that has been doing some of the more interesting tooling around #Kubernetes. All of which is worth much more than $250m for Red Hat.
Red Hat currently generates more than $2bn annually in revenues, but the key to its future is to add a few billion through things like Ansible (automation) and, in particular, Kubernetes (read: OpenShift). Red Hat executives have regularly touted the benefits of OpenShift to its business, leading to larger deals that pull along other products (like Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

The US showed keen interest in European #techcompanies and led activity in 2016, particularly when it came to the amount of money spent. US corporates were responsible for acquiring 202 European tech companies, spending more than $50bn, a 47% increase from last year. It’s not just the strategic buyers, however. In 2016, of the 10 largest software M&A/buyouts, 6 were acquired by US financial buyers; likewise 3 of the largest 11 deals in Internet technology involved US private-equity funds. The biggest US M&A deal in European tech last year was the $47bn #Qualcomm acquisition of semiconductor manufacturer #NXP, marking a strong play in the burgeoning connected car space. Also notable were #Verizon’s $2.4bn acquisition of #Fleetmatics, the SaaS solution that tracks fleets of vehicles in real-time, as well as #CATechnologies’ acquisition of #Automic for $638m, marking CA’s largest deal for some years.
Naturally the highest levels of activity came from the Big 5 (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple), which continued to lead the way with European acquisitions, acquiring 11 companies between them in 2016. These 5 have gobbled up a total of 55 European acquisitions since 2011. We also saw high activity from US-based private-equity funds such as Advent International, Bain Capital and Silver Lake, which were all active; Advent and Bain Capital acquired payments-software Setefi Services for $1.2bn in May 2016, while Silver Lake acquired business-management Cegid software for $481m in April 2016.
