This is some advice people looking at getting a #madebygoogle #Pixel2 that was announced today.
With the loss of the headphone jack, the #USB #TypeC connector has become the primary audio port for the phone. Based on what I've seen in the product launch livestream, I wanted to issue a reminder to people that this phone uses digital USB-C audio.
This means, in effect, there is a mini-Digital-to-Analog-Converter (DAC) chip built directly into the Pixel 2 headphone cable itself, the dongle, or connected with the earbuds. This allows greater audio fidelity, and removes the need for an expensive DAC in the phone itself.
Please do not accidentally purchase passive/analog USB-C headphone adapters, such as used the Moto Z. These ANALOG USB-C adapters WILL NOT work on the Pixel 2 (and are quite prevalent on Amazon):

If you are looking for a list of "approved/tested" headphones that are Digital, please consult the link below on the Google Pixel Help Forums where I volunteer. The wired headphones listed here are DIGITAL USB-C and WILL work with the Pixel 2!

Please note wireless is also an option. The Pixel Earbuds linked below are a great choice, as are any BT5.0 headphones. (This includes the Apple earPods!)

If you are concerned about wireless audio quality, the Pixel 2 (and Pixel 1) supports the aptX 'lossless' codecs as well as the low-fi A2DP codecs. (There may be some latency/lag with wireless headphones, but I cannot comment. Nexus devices remain A2DP only.)
Digital USB-C audio means any "Made For Android" DAC should work. So those of you audio enthusiasts with high-quality external DAC/preamps can continue to use them! Just make sure the drivers are supported in Android.
The removal of the 3.5mm minijack port (headphone port) on the phone is a bit divisive issue, but I presume Google has enough faith in the reliability and quality of USB-C to do it. It also means in order to "play and charge" with wired headphones, you may need a USB-C hub with passthrough charging. If such a product does not exist, it will be invented shortly.
It is right here. (Thanks +John H Lee!)

I haven't been able to preorder a Pixel 2 yet, but I'm eager to try it out with everything: the built-in earphones, the included Digital DAC dongle, the Pixel Earbuds, and the Apple earPods, to see how well they work. More details to come. (Hopefully.)
Edit: As noted in the comments by +Benson Leung, there are certain intricacies about a "single headset jack" (insertion detection, audio detect, buttons, routing) that need to be done correctly.
Please look for the "Made for Google" logo on third party accessories to guarantee a well designed periperal.
