Hurricane Irma: Infrared view | NASA-NOAA Suomi-NPP Satellite
In this Suomi NPP satellite infrared image from Sept. 8 at 2:39 a.m. EDT, the well-defined eye of Irma is visible with convection around the eye which is indicative of an intense tropical system. Strongest thunderstorms with coldest cloud tops (black) were as cold as 195 Kelvin.

Hurricane scientists have never seen an image like this before
"Climate change is making hurricanes more powerful for longer periods of time. They need the energy from the warm, humid air above tropical oceans to keep up their strength.
A hurricane begins as a tropical storm, when winds coming from different directions converge. Warm air rises around the storm’s center and cools, and the moisture condenses to form clouds and rain. Condensation releases latent heat, which powers hurricanes. If the layer of warm water isn’t at least 200 feet deep, a tropical storm could die before gaining hurricane strength.
The potential for destruction is also greater because warmer temperatures mean the air can hold more moisture, so hurricanes produce more rain, causing more floods. Rising sea levels also lead to greater and greater surges after a storm..."

Hurricane Irma Forecast for Florida Keys | National Weather Service
For updated forecasts on Irma, visit: www.nhc.noaa.gov.
Hurricane Irma is now a Category 5 storm. It continues to churn north of Cuba in the Straits of Florida.
Warning: This morning may be your last chance to evacuate!
The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.

The Hurricane Irma/Jose 1-2 Punch
Blog Link: https://goo.gl/b5SLtg
It’s hard to believe it was only a week ago when I asked what would happen after Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Jose are are about to hit Florida back to back. How are cities in Florida going to deal with this 1-2 punch? And is this the new normal?

"Before Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Aug. 25, there was little doubt that its impact would be devastating and wide-ranging.
Unfortunately, Harvey delivered and then some with early estimates of the damage at over US$190 billion, which would make it the costliest storm in U.S. history. The rain dumped on the Houston area by Harvey has been called "unprecedented," making engineering and floodplain design standards look outdated at best and irresponsible at worst.
But to dismiss this as a once-in-a-lifetime event would be a mistake. With more very powerful storms forming in the Atlantic this hurricane season, we should know better. We must listen to those telling a more complicated story, one that involves decades of land use planning and poor urban design that has generated impervious surfaces at a fantastic pace.
As the Houston region turns its attention to rebuilding and other cities consider ramping up efforts to make their infrastructure more resilient, it is this story that can provide valuable lessons for policymakers, planners, engineers, developers and the public. These lessons are all the more important against the backdrop of a Trump administration that has stripped requirements for infrastructure projects to consider climate impacts and may try to offer an infrastructure investment package.
We draw from our research as a social scientist and an engineer and from our experience helping to lead the Urban Resilience to Extreme Weather Events Sustainability Research Network (funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation). Here are six rules for investing in infrastructure for the 21st century that recognize the need to rethink how we design and operate our infrastructure".

To all my Floridian friends,
#Florida #Hurricane #Irma
I hope you all stay safe these next 48 hours. I personally can't imagine the uncertainty of a hurricane situation as my side of the country is often plagued with snowstorms, firestorms, and earthquakes. They just happen without warning and don't seem to kill many people like it did in the last century or two.
But that is the true reality of all modern catastrophic events and the numbers prove it accurately. The death and injury toll won't be near enough for the sensationalist talking head's orgasmic salivating on the 24 hour news cycle as the damage is witnessed. With that morbid and slightly joking observation I hope you realize like me, that it will all blow over. Humanity will score some Karma points and the cold civil war perpetrated by the general brainwashed society will be on truce.
Feel free to check in and let us know how you're doing.
