All along, the #WhiteHouse had hoped that President Donald #Trump's torment over #Russia would end with #RobertMueller's final report. Now the special counsel's final flourish is beginning to look like just the start of the President's frustrations. #HouseDemocrats, armed with subpoena power, on Wednesday (Feb 6) announced a broader-than-expected investigation into Trump's ties to Russia, #SaudiArabia and just about anywhere else. And criminal probes are digging ever deeper into the global business record of the real estate billionaire who became President and therefore opened himself to painful scrutiny.
House Intelligence Chairman #AdamSchiff announced Wednesday that he would expand his scope beyond Russia to examine whether Trump's business interests are influencing his foreign policy decisions. The new interest in Trump's past and present business holdings confirms one of the worst fears of the President's confidants: that even if Mueller gives him a pass, he faces prolonged and perilous exposure to new investigations that could last for months.

#Democrats in the U.S. #HouseofRepresentatives have quietly tweaked a rule on taking secret depositions that is likely to give a boost to their investigations of President Donald #Trump, his personal finances and his administration. The little-noticed change, made since the Democrats took over majority control of the House earlier this month, will let staffers of House investigative committees take testimony from subpoenaed witnesses without a lawmaker being present. By eliminating complications with lawmakers’ schedules, the change will let staffers work faster and range more widely.
Attorney general nominee #WilliamBarr indicated last week that he was unlikely to release the final report from Special Counsel #RobertMueller to lawmakers in its original format. If Barr is confirmed and holds back on #Mueller’s report, the rule change may help House investigators rapidly replicate Mueller’s work. The rule change was requested by the House Oversight Committee. But it will also affect the work of other investigative panels, such as the Intelligence and Judiciary committees.
