President Donald #Trump is using the #governmentshutdown to try to force Democrats to fund his Mexican border wall. But there is another, more personal benefit for the president that he probably won’t be mentioning anytime soon: An important appeal in the lawsuit over foreign payments to his Washington, DC, hotel and other businesses has been put on hold. Trump is being sued by the District of #Columbia and #Maryland because they say he is violating the Constitution’s ' #emoluments' clause, which forbids federal officials from accepting emoluments, a term for gifts or payments for services or labor from foreign governments or US states.

The states have won several important procedural decisions, but federal attorneys have filed a number of appeals to slow them down, most notably seeking a freeze on any further discovery - like subpoenas the states might pursue to get information on foreign officials’ stays at the Trump International Hotel in DC. Now the #JusticeDepartment lawyers representing Trump have secured a delay in the ongoing appeals. They cited the current government shutdown, now in its sixth day.

During the #GovernmentShutdown, taxpayers will still have access to #IRS online services, including filing #taxreturns and paying tax online.

No #taxrefunds will be issued, but processing of returns with payments will continue as will E-filing up to the point of refunds.

IT-related workers will still report for duty to ensure that taxpayer data is protected and that computer systems function.

The partial #governmentshutdown could have a negative impact on President #Trump. While there appears to be a stalemate in negotiations between #Republicans and #Democrats over funding for the border wall, there doesn’t seem to be an end to this shutdown in sight. The current partial shutdown has started 'under unified government' with the #GOP controlling the House, Senate and #WhiteHouse.

What happens when the shutdowns go for longer than say a week, two weeks, that stretch into a third week or perhaps longer than that, that’s when you start having real political costs in terms of people’s bases starting to get nervous and you also have the economic costs, which the state of the market they are today is something that the president doesn’t want.

President Donald #Trump suggested he could force a prolonged #governmentshutdown Wednesday (Dec 26) as the partial closure dragged into its fifth day. The party's leaders and the #Trumpadministration are not close to a deal to break the stalemate. #Congress is set to convene Thursday, but many members will not return to Washington after holiday travel as a vote on a spending bill is not expected yet.

If the closure carries into the new Congress, #Democrats will have a wide enough House majority to approve funding legislation on their own. Any spending bill will need support from at least some Senate Republicans, as the GOP will hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber next year. But if Trump continues to threaten to veto any bill without wall funding, it will make ending the shutdown difficult.

When there is a #GovernmentShutdown under a Cthulhu presidency, it will be permanent, but no one will be alive to worry about getting paid.

Donald #Trump threatened to close the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday (Dec 28) as a week-long partial #governmentshutdown appeared likely to stretch into 2019 because of an impasse over funding for the president’s proposed border wall. Trump’s latest ultimatum comes a day after House #Republicans said they didn’t plan any votes this week and as the president sought to shift blame to Democrats for a stalemate over funding for a wall that a majority of Americans don’t support, according to polls.

There was no sign of any progress toward a plan to fund 9 government departments that closed after funding ran out Dec. 21. The Senate and House held brief sessions Thursday afternoon, and neither chamber took any votes. Congress is scheduled to return on Monday (Dec 31) although no votes are scheduled, and lawmakers will be in recess on New Year’s Day. The current Congress ends at noon Jan. 3, when new members elected in November’s midterm election will take their oaths.
