The #globaleconomy is starting to show signs of strain from the 'America First' push of U.S President Donald #Trump who will hear renewed pleas to step back from a broader trade war when he visits #Europe in the coming week. Against a crescendo of measures and counter-measures, and threats of more to come, caution about investment is growing among employers in many countries around the world, including in the #UnitedStates.

Trump has vowed to stick to his promises of protection for U.S. industries against what he says is unfair competition from China, the #EuropeanUnion and beyond, even if many analysts say his punitive tariffs are likely to backfire on the #USeconomy. Ripping up the play-book for global trade of recent decades, he hit metal imports with tariffs in June and has threatened to curb car imports from Europe with a 20% duty.

While the #UnitedStates and #China are locked in a costly #tradewar, #IvankaTrump’s clothing and shoe business is not only exempted from the tariffs - it is in the pink. US President Donald #Trump’s daughter has long had her apparel and shoes #madeinChina and thanks to a major exemption for Chinese garment and footwear in the tariffs dispute, the #clothingindustry looks likely to be left unscathed.

The US imposed an additional 25% tariff on US$34bn worth of Chinese goods on Friday (July 6). Among the sectors affected were nuclear reactors, boats and aircraft, but #clothing was exempted. According to the American #Apparel and #Footwear Association, about a third of the clothing and 72% of the shoes sold in the US are from China. One of those importers is the eponymous fashion label of Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and adviser.

#5G is about much more than high-speed #mobile #internet. It is being touted as a #technology that could support the next generation of infrastructure, from the billions of internet-connected devices expected to come online in the next few years, to #smartcities and #driverlesscars. 5G could be key to President Donald #Trump's pledge to 'make America great again' and #China's ambition to be the world leader in #artificialintelligence ( #AI) by 2030. At stake is trillions of dollars of economic value. In 2035, 5G is expected to enable $12.3tn of global economic output, according to IHS Markit.

While the #US has been pushing back against China, the world's second-largest economy has been looking to leave its mark on other countries in terms of 5G. Huawei has been lobbying Australian politicians. The FT revealed that the Chinese giant was the biggest corporate sponsor of overseas trips for Australian lawmakers. The Portuguese arm of telecoms firm Altice teamed up with Huawei to roll out 5G networks.

German Chancellor #AngelaMerkel called talk of a trade surplus 'outdated.' She explained that, 'if services were included in the trade balance, then the #US would have a major surplus over #Europe!' Mr. #Trump is right that the US has a goods deficit with the #EuropeanUnion. Think of all those BMWs, Mercedes, the champagne, the Haribo sweets. But Ms. Merkel is right that, if you add services and corporate profits to the equation - that is, the Apples, Googles, Facebooks, Amazons - the US comes out on top. The 2017 figures above came from the US Commerce Department.

One also needs to consider the 'new economy' of digital companies. If you look at services and corporate profits alone in that area, the US has a 'surplus' of some $167bn. About $51bn of that is simply from exporting services. More than $100bn comes from cash inflows back into the US. On the surface, that accounts for a surplus. The trouble is, not only does Facebook offer fewer jobs than BMW, but figuring out exactly which country benefits from the 'digital economy' is a murkier business.

German Chancellor #AngelaMerkel has warned the #Trump administration that hitting auto imports with new tariffs would have dire consequences. President Donald Trump has threatened to place a 20% tariff on all European cars coming to the #UnitedStates if the #EuropeanUnion doesn't remove its own trade barriers.

Targeting cars would dramatically raise the stakes in the spat between #Europe and its biggest trading partner. #EU - #US trade in goods and services is worth more than €1tn euros ($1.2tn) each year. The European Union said earlier this week that America's trading partners could retaliate against nearly $300bn of US exports if the Trump administration decides to penalize automobile imports from around the world.

He knows China will.be superb power
Donald #Trump’s #MAGA ( #MakeAmericaGreatAgain) campaign is, in part at least, to be ' #MadeinChina', where flags supporting the #US president’s 2020 re-election campaign would be cobbled together on a Chinese assembly line. Li Jiang's company has become one of the world's leading flag suppliers ever since China joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001, according to NPR. The company has sold national flags to Germany, France and Brazil, and was even contracted to supply flags for Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential campaign.

By choosing to buy flags from #China, Trump appears to have followed in the footsteps of other trading partners before him, except his numerous public and vociferous speeches rejecting Chinese imports have signaled a tangible detour away from his key electoral slogan to ' #BuyAmerican, #hireAmerican'. It’s not the first time that Trump's pro-protectionist stance has come back to bite him. The US media have made it their business to track down the country of origin of everything the president touches, sells or wears.

The root of the problem for #Trump with #Canada and #Mexico stems from the #NAFTA, signed in 1994, which the president has called a 'disaster' and 'one of the worst deals anybody in history has ever entered into'. The White House wants to renegotiate the terms of NAFTA and is using import #tariffs to apply pressure. When it comes to #China, Trump believes Beijing is using 'unfair' trade practices to gain an advantage on the #US, including lax observation of intellectual property law.

The president also takes issue with the size of the US trade deficit with China. Some economists question the accuracy of the official figures, yet the US Census Bureau shows America bought $376bn more of Chinese goods than the total value of all US goods sold in the Asian country last year. Trump has also called the state of trade between the US and the #EU 'unfair', as official data shows a large trade surplus for the Europeans. Imports of cars from Europe - particularly Germany - are the primary source of complaint for the US president.

A long-threatened #tradewar between the #US and #China has got under way after the world’s two largest economies imposed tariffs on each other. The US implemented tariffs on $34bn in Chinese goods, to which Beijing responded with levies on a similar quantity of US imports. Trump has threatened to raise tariffs if China retaliates to roughly the value of total Chinese exports to the US last year of $506bn.

Syracuse University economics professor Mary Lovely and researcher Yang Liang found 87% of electronics products to be levied by US tariffs came from multinationals and joint ventures rather than Chinese firms. China’s economy is no longer as dependent on exports. Domestic consumption now accounts for more than half of the country’s GDP. Exports to the US account for only 19% of all of China’s exports.

The #tradewar, which went into full bore on Friday (July 6), has been an unpopular policy among many inside and outside of Silicon Valley. In late May, Apple CEO #TimCook blasted President #Trump over his approach to trade with China, saying that tariffs are not the right approach to take. Outside of Silicon Valley, several prominent Republicans have expressed concerns over the #tariffs the administration is placing on Chinese goods.

Former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney expressed hope that the tariffs can be quickly removed and a new trade agreement can be agreed upon by the world's two largest economies. In May, Sen. Ben Sasse said the idea of a trade war was 'dumb,' noting that placing massive aluminum and steel tariffs on Canada, Mexico and the European Union was negative.

#Russia has raised tariffs on a handful of #US imports after the Kremlin condemned President Donald #Trump’s #tariffs on foreign #steel and #aluminum as protectionist. Moscow approved new restrictions on U.S. road construction equipment, oil and gas equipment, metal processing and rock-drilling tools, as well as optic fiber. Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Oreshkin said the move was a response to U.S. tariffs. Oreshkin estimated that U.S. tariffs had cost Russian steel and aluminum companies $537.6m in damages already. Russia’s countertariffs would only compensate them $87.6m.
