The #ForumonChinaAfricaCooperation (FOCAC) is set to take place in Beijing on Monday and Tuesday (Sept 3rd and 4th) - 'an event of global significance, which Beijing awaits with feverish enthusiasm.' #China and #Africa are in a 'win-win situation,' and the cooperation will benefit all countries concerned, according to China's Foreign Minister #WangYi.

The growth in trade between China and Africa is actually impressive: According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the volume of trade in 2000 stood at $10bn (โ‚ฌ8.5bn). In the 17 years since, the figure has risen 20-fold to $200bn. In the meantime, Africa's trade with Europe and the United States has stagnated for years. In addition, the #Africancontinent has seen a sharp rise in Chinese direct investment.

WIN-WIN COOPERATION
The world needs multilateralism more than ever and needs a stronger #UN, Chinese President #XiJinping said in a meeting with the Secretary General of the UN #AntonioGuterres at the Great Hall of the People on Sunday.

Guterres is in China as a special guest to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The UN is a symbol of multilateralism, Xi said, noting that China has always firmly supported multilateralism and the authority of the UN.

The Chinese president encouraged all countries to follow the principle of multilateralism, confronting unilateralism and protectionism.

He reiterated China's determination to comprehensively deepen reforms and jointly adhere to the rule of free trade and an open world economy.

Xi also stressed that China cooperates with Africa without any political conditions attached.

Guterres said the #FOCAC has become a model for South-South cooperation.

The UN will work with #China to promote multilateralism, he said, encouraging other countries to participate in the #BeltAndRoad Initiative ( #BRI ).

Based on the needs of the #Africancountries, #China has provided development financing to help them build railways, highways, ports, bridges, airports, power grids, and information and communications infrastructure. China has also helped #Africa develop agriculture, and build agricultural technology demonstration centers, and sent agrotechnological experts to the continent to strengthen its food security.

China and Africa have jointly established industrial parks and economic and trade cooperation zones throughout the continent, which have helped develop Africa's manufacturing sector and promoted industrialization and economic diversification, creating many job opportunities for the African people, facilitating the transfer of technology to the African countries, and increasing their incomes.

#China is slated to pledge billions of dollars more in aid and loans to #Africannations at a key conference in Beijing on Monday (Sept 3), even as rising debt risks and lower-than-expected returns have slowed Chinese investment in the continent. In all, leaders from 53 African nations are expected to take part in next weekโ€™s #ForumonChinaAfricaCooperation.

Despite growing concerns over Chinese lending, Chinese President #XiJinping is expected to announce even more financing to #Africa in his keynote address at the forum, after pledging US$60bn in loans and grants at the last conference in 2015. But Chinaโ€™s direct investments to Africa have slowed slightly in recent years, from a peak of US$3.4bn in 2013 to US$3.1bn last year, according to data from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

#China has passed Europe and the United States as the biggest trading partner of most #Africancountries. Most run large deficits with Beijing, exporting minerals and buying Chinese manufactured goods. China's commercial presence in Africa has prompted complaints in some countries that the continent gets too little from the relationship. #Africa is a major target of Beijing's ' #BeltandRoad' initiative to build ports, highways and other trade-related infrastructure, but some critics in #Tanzania, #Kenya and other countries say they leave hosts with too much debt.

The #ForumonChinaAfricaCooperation, opening Monday (Sept 3), brings together leaders from China and more than 50 African countries. Dozens of African leaders have met with Chinese President #XiJinping ahead of the conference. The participants are looking for ways to 'advance common growth and development,' according to #SouthAfrica's foreign minister, Lindiwe Sisulu.

#Chinaโ€™s massive and expanding #BeltandRoad trade infrastructure project is running into speed bumps as some countries begin to grumble about being buried under Chinese debt. First announced in 2013 by Chinese President #XiJinping (็ฟ’่ฟ‘ๅนณ), the initiative also known as the 'new Silk Road' envisions the construction of railways, roads and ports around the globe, with Beijing providing billions of dollars in loans to many countries.

The huge endeavor brings much-needed infrastructure improvements to developing countries, while giving China destinations to unload its industrial overcapacity and facilities to stock up on raw materials. However, a study by the Center for Global Development, a US think tank, found 'serious concerns' about the sustainability of the sovereign debt in eight countries receiving Belt and Road funds.

#China is all set to showcase its growing influence in #Africa at next Monday's (Sept 3) China-Africa summit to be attended by a number of African leaders where President #XiJinping is expected to announce new projects under the #BeltandRoadInitiative (BRI). China is investing billions of dollars in aid and projects, making Africa the most focussed destination under the BRI.

Themed 'China and Africa: Toward an Even Stronger Community with a Shared Future through Win-Win Cooperation', the summit is expected to be attended by leaders and officials from 53 African states except Swaziland, the tiny African kingdom which still remained allied with Taiwan, spurning Beijing's overtures. UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres is due to attend it. Xi and Premier #LiKeqiang were busy receiving African leaders and holding talks with them.
