And not cool to publicize private correspondence like that while the rescue was ongoing, and as a means to disparage the Thai geologist/official who was in charge of it all. I mean, this isn’t is hard. 🤷‍♀️

I did. Repeatedly. One of the lead divers whose time is so precious that the whole thing stops while he sleeps isn’t the one you contact; and if you promise a backup option, anyone will say go for it. After the rescue he said it wasn’t right. Anyway, issue is the way it was done.

I waited to publish till the rescue was over and there was some distance. I put in clarifications to prevent misunderstandings instead of using all my precious ~800 words to better make make my case.. It's like we're supposed to fight oxygen but our only tools are matches.🤷‍♀️

One of the rainiest regions in Mexico, with residents having little clean water to drink but a Coca-Cola factory right around. 😡

Even well-meaning ones! Developing a back-up option quietly would have been right, and never ever bug hands-on rescuers whose time is super precious. They cannot technically evaluate the backup plan on-the-go like that. There are others who can, find them. Thanks for your work!

Thank you though not hard. Also, if I get the sainthood does that mean I have to tweet more? yikes

Absolutely. (I was once reading about some airplane crash investigation, really deep into it, and then I looked up and saw the frightened eyes of my seatmates... on the plane. I'm so chill about commercial airline safety that I forgot & freaked them out😬).

Seems Musk has deleted his inflammatory tweets & his responses to me. 🤷‍♀️That makes it hard to follow threads so here's my screenshots on why developing a back-up option QUIETLY is great but doing it with gobs of publicity has potential for harm.

HELL TO THE YES. We’ve had decades of lionising risk-taking against-all-odds big-third-act-battle rebel mavericky down-with-experts heroes. It’s dumb in films and disastrous in life

Sure. Also SpaceX is personless. I am personally still awestruck that the rescue worked. What a huge risk everyone took to plan it, to authorize it, to dare it. I was personally quite pessimistic they would get all 13 out alive given the conditions/non-swimming kids...

It could be terrible at the hands of a billionnaire-struck official—distracting/wasting precious time/attention at best. Needed to be on the quiet side--fly in cavers, engineers, divers, work on it. Maybe one tweet: anyone who can help, email this account we'll bring you in. imo

My argument is that both cultures are innovative and disruptive—in different ways. More bureaucratic-seeming safety cultures are often quite creative and innovative. Giant risks for sure, kids couldn't equalize with full face-masks plus what appear to be some dosage of benzos?

Well I tried to write a calm, balanced short article on what different innovation cultures could learn from one another—on purpose after the rescue was over & flashy attention/traffic dwindling. I waited on purpose. Anyway, the "pedo guy" comment wasn't my doing or choice.🤷‍♀️

Actually don’t disgree. Online economics plus human attention dynamics have greatly exacerbated these problems.

There are many situations when sanity requires that they turn things over to experts and it is often an uphill fight. Given the Thai political context, I was pessimistic but yeah, kudos to the officials. Really tragic with the Thai Navy Seal though. Air-management issues. :-(

I use the term for myself, didn't know. (I know it from Turkish so thanks for letting me know the English connotation). I dabbled in caving gave up because of the danger. Only open water diving now. :-D
