And as notes, the $4.3 million is coming to light thanks to Netanyahu's repeated requests to allow two wealthy businessmen to fund his legal defense: one of them, his cousin, Milikowsky, was a major share holder in the same steel company from which Bibi held shares.

Another interesting aspect of this case is that Netanyahu's current political opponents were all involved in one way or another: Bogi was defense minister when the deal was approved, Ashkenazi & Gantz were successive chief's of staff, and Lapid was in the security cabinet.

While this is the worst possible timing possible for Netanyahu, it is unlikely to have any effect in the polls. He is already facing a hearing on bribery and breach of trust. But it does provide an avenue for Gantz & co. to break Bibi's tight grip on the election news cycle.

Worth noting that Bibi was originally left out because AG said from the outset of the investigation that the matter was unrelated to him. And the police's report said it didn't investigate issues related to the decision-making process and planning for defense procurements.

The release of this ad coincides perfectly with a new report on populism in Israel. How does Shaked's efforts to strip the supreme court fit into the broader picture of threats to democracy? Check out my co-authored piece with

The real significance of this ad is that Naftali Bennett and Shaked's much-hyped "New Right" party is floundering in the polls and they are desperately trying to grab the attention of right-wing voters with this stunt. Guess we'll see if it works.

Must read from my colleagues and ycmizrahi on whether Israel is in democratic decline. Basic answer is: its democratic institutions are resilient but its civil society is under challenge. Undermining one will undermine the other.

Immensely grateful to have such a brilliant mentor, , who I worked with to review the trend of populist politics in Israel, providing insights into the sources of Israel's democratic vulnerability, as well as its resilience.

A foreign expert on KSA reminded me that it's also a trope advanced by members of the royal family, to obfuscate, and to bring pressure on certain members of the family. Basically, "a source familiar with the workings of the royal court" is usually not trustworthy.
