months ago I stumbled across a PDF manual for a "nuclear event detector" that mentioned, hilariously, the product warranty. I wrote short story for about what the post-nuclear warranty process might look like.

I think that if we were discussing, say, regulating chemical companies, the public wouldn’t find the argument that clean water enforcement might stifle Dow Chemical’s innovation as persuasive. But tech innovation is considered precious and exceptional.

Khanna’s resolution called for “oversight” re: algorithmic decision making, which he told me should be happening at the federal level. But he also doesn’t want it to “stifle innovation.” I think good, strong regulation is going to have to stifle some innovation.

I think it’s a hallmark of good federal regulation that the entities being regulated dislike it. I also disagree with Rep. Khanna that the likes of Facebook and IBM, two repeat offenders, deserve a seat at the table.

A recent congressional resolution calls for ethical guidelines AI at the federal level. But we should be suspicious of any regulation that’s endorsed by the likes of Facebook and IBM.
