Senate staffer: “I’m not sure that people still understand what the nuclear deterrent is. There’s been a lot of turnover on Capitol Hill the last 10 years. A lot of turnover in this town.” Yet lawmakers making decisions about massive nuke modernization.

Concept is as old as the post-Cold War era and even pre-dates STRATCOM. The last Strategic Air Command force structure study called it Twin Triad: two legs of ICBM/SLBMs doing day-to-day deterrence, backed up by de-alerted bombers that can be re-armed

Richard Burt and : “Arms Race 2.0 is arguably more dangerous in an era characterized by cyber-enhanced information warfare and the introduction of advanced capabilities by both countries that could undermine strategic stability.”

On JCPOA, the Trump adninistration is the “rogue,” not Iran. US should work with Allies and Russia/China to maintain JCPOA, not sabotage the best available tool for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

True. Remember when “East of Urals” was suggested as solution after Strategic Concept/DDPR asking Russia to move tac nukes back from NATO borders, the issue of Asian security immediately became an issue.

Also, why does SSC-8 shorten decision time when it’s no faster than Kalibr or Iskander? I’m concerned about both developments, but puzzled why one lowers threshold if the other does not. I mean, a low-yield W76-2 on a Trident SLBM will get on target a lot faster than SSC-8. 2/2

SSC-8s “are mobile, they are hard to detect, they will reduce the warning time and therefore they reduce the threshold for any potential use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.” How come SSC-8 lowers threshold but US W76-2/SLCM increase threshold? 2/1

I’m saying if Putin was worried about a NATO threat five years ago, then his actions have stimulated a development that has increased the military capabilities of NATO. That seems to be a failed defense strategy on his part.

NATO’s : “the European Allies and Canada will add 100 billion extra US dollars for defence spending from 2016, by the end of 2020.” Great work Putin. Making Russia Safer Again.

The NPR says at least 80. But STRATCOM and NNSA still have to show how they get to that number of pits.

Smart energy planning in Morocco: “Alongside hydro and wind, the [new solar] plant will help provide nearly half of Morocco’s electricity from renewables by 2020...” Imagine if US government would prioritize building such plants across its southern and central states.

Perhaps they use same loader with only 2 missiles. Would help explain why US intel estimate is 100 missiles and not 128: 4 btl x 4 TEL x 4 canister = 64 missiles + reloads (4 btl x 4 TEL x 2 reload missiles = 32) adds up to 96.

This official is also advocate of nuke SLCM. But don’t think this is warheads vs delivery system issue (who cares about fancy warhead if delivery system can’t get it to the target). Depending on constituency, officials/agencies/labs are pushing all of the above. Let’s see budget!
