Addendum for hobby-linguists: Exact wording on Schengen in French is „remettre à plat l‘espace Schengen“. English version much weaker „rethink the Schengen area“. Same weak form also in German („Schengen-Raum neu überdenken“). NB: Schengen is unpopular in 🇫🇷. Wording matters.

Then: defence (EU security council), common EU-body to defend democracies against cyber-war (role unclear), EU-DARPA (good), some strongly worded messages on EU industrial policy. Overall: sharp start into EP-campaign. Merkel will try to ignore - but Macron has set the tone. 4/4

Interesting: proposal to create common social protection (“bouclier social”). Clear signal to political left. No surprise: almosy nothing on the euro. And then there is climate. Macron puts a lot of emphasis on targets which he wants to make binding for all EU institutions. 3/4

Strongest message on Schengen: Macron calls to start from scratch. Those who want to participate need to agree to joint asylum system, joint border control, and joint allocation system. I fully agree with Macron on this one. Question: is 🇫🇷 ready for this? 2/4
