Mostly Turkish politics and economy, with a healthy side order of Brexit/Beşiktaş/Arsenal angst

I think I can do it in fewer than 1,000: “If you get obstinate with your backside, you’ll end up soiling yourself.” The Turkish has been doing the rounds on whatsapp.

Basically, BY got 50%, Other got 4% and Eİ got 46%. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the electorate.

I never thought I’d see the day when I’d go out of my way to really critically scrutinise Star newspaper. Thanks Alexander! ;)

I remember when TRCs were vogue. Might become a hot topic one day.

I know many American Greeks, although none that identify as incest enthusiasts. Incidentally, I wonder how she researched that particular group’s voting preferences?

Overlapping and concentric circles of identity might make that analysis tough. I’d personally love to meet the person who was ALL of those identities.

Aaaa, "Let's kill lower league football as well" seems perfectly timed to suppress growing dissatisfaction.

Before you all get excited that Turkey has re-democratised and is automatically moving to a bright new future, hold your horses. The Gezi Park trial starts today. The weaponisation of the judiciary is going to be a problem that will take decades to solve.

The walk was by nature a moment of civil disobedience and showed leadership through action rather than speech. That he didn't leverage that moment afterwards is testament to his failings as a strategic leader. I love what he's doing when he's behind the scenes but only there.

Oh I'm sure they'll try but I'm doubtful it will work. They are going to have to radically rehaul their adviser structures, economic management and FP if they are to get over this. Simple narrative twists aren't enough any more given the economy and stronger opposition.

I don't think this is true. Everyone saw how the first election was ripped away, a major reason for the landslide. And the economy collapsing will be near impossible to tie to the cities. I think it's more important what they lost: no more CHPKK narrative after last week.

To unpack that a bit, it is now obvious that leadership is getting terrible advice. If last night hasn't made them realise that, nothing will. We have an army of million-earning advisers who have lost sense of reality (if they ever had one).

Ending meritocracy and rewarding loyalty above all will tend to do that.

I think there was a plan but as every Turkish teyze will tell you: Evdeki hesap çarşıya uymaz. In this economy and against this candidate, the tactics of old turned out to be very stale indeed.

I think you may want to rephrase this tweet. Although the alternative reading is also probably accurate.

Seriously, Steven, I agree with a lot of what you're saying but 1) tweets are not the way to have a strategic discussion about future Turkish societal change and 2) I'm hungover and still happy about this one small sliver of light. Let's do this later, in Paris, over wine.
