‘The Art School is, at the end of the day, one of the very best buildings of the early 20th century anywhere in the world’

Unexpectedly ended up in Madrid (a long story). Turned on the TV and the GSA fire is on the news. A reminder of how well known and widely admired the building is.

It’s a devastating sight but the Mac is still standing. building control experts will work with partners to do everything possible to make sure that remains the case. Starting early next week, I’ll convene a Sauchiehall St taskforce to plan the area’s future.

Truly heartbreaking news overnight. We stand united with all those affected by the devastating fire and our thoughts are with everyone who has worked so hard on the restoration and refurbishment. We will offer any and all assistance we can in the days and weeks ahead.

A great read last month, now a sad study of further loss. "Returning to curious shades of minty green & rusty red, following months of specialist paint analysis. It won’t be the whitewashed place people remember, but it is what Mackintosh intended."

Hard to take and hard to look at these pictures following last nights fire. The restoration was advancing so well, creating so much excitement and enthusiasm.

The last time I was inside the Mack, the 'hen run' had been restored, the library was getting back together, the new roof was in place. It was a working building again after the May 2014 fire..and now this.

Had just been chatting to the director last week about the great progress they had made with the refurbishment. So much excitement and enthusiasm. Hard to take.

Devastating news about the ongoing incident at the Glasgow School of Art. Thoughts with all the emergency services as they work their way through this. Glasgow City Council teams on hand to assist residents and those affected. Please stay safe.

There are no words that can sum up how numbing this is for the GSofA, its staff and students, for Glasgow and all those who love the building.

The Council Leader and Lord Provost (both women) would have been there to preform the opening. But attended the funeral of Pat Lally which was at the same time.

Particularly honoured to have been involved today. As a proud Glaswegian of Irish descent I hope the memorial serves as a place of peaceful respect and reflection. A space for contemplation and commemoration for those weakened by the famine and those who in the end prevailed.

Not that you'd need an extra reason to go to the brilliant but with our Dali coming home you've got an extra special reason to visit. The painting is returing after a hugely successful visit to the Royal Academy and the Dali Museum.

I was attending Pat Lally’s funeral this morning so (brilliantly by all accounts) did the honours for the City Government at this long awaited event. This lovely garden memorial has such historical & emotional resonance for so many Glaswegians.
