Read Benny Gantz's speech and you'll see that his platform on peace/security issues would have found a home in Likud - before its recent descent into hypernationalism. nails it.

Meanwhile, the Senate GOP is pushing "pro-Israel" (quotation marks because it's not really pro-Israel) legislation that undermines the marketplace of ideas.

Israel Resilience, Yesh Atid, Labor, Joint List, ARM, Meretz, Kulanu, averaging a combined 57 seats in polls, have already said they won't join a govt led by an indicted Netanyahu.

Yes, damage done (not to mention article's wading into occupation-denial) - but should still mitigate via correction.

Latest, post-Gantz-kickoff election poll has 3 parties (2 of them Netanyahu allies) teetering around the vote threshold, and 4 other parties not much safer. This could tip the balance and be the story of the elections (my article coming soon).

Small but very significant correction to the article on pro-Israel Dems by : Post-it note in Rep. Tlaib's office reading "Palestine" was not placed "over Israel", but over Libya/Egypt.

And here's the UN reaction: "While the TIPH is not a United Nations body, its role in contributing positively to defusing tensions in such a sensitive area has been widely recognized, including by the General Assembly (most recently in resolution 73/99)."

Norwegian Foreign Ministry says Israel's decision to expel TIPH observers from Hebron might be a violation of the Oslo Accords. They note that the situation in Hebron is unstable and that the expulsion of TIPH is a "concerning" development.

I tend to agree. I don't in any way consider Gantz "left" (unless "left" semantically takes in everyone not committed to Greater Land of Israel), but I do think it's true that Israeli public opinion loves its security credentials and tough talk.

Pretty insane that the hedged on naming the occupation. It's not only what "calls' the occupation. It's what the UN, international law, and basically the rest of the entire world except for the US press, defines as the occupation.

Now 4 candidates propose some form of regional approach to advancing resolution w (Gantz, Lapid, Livni, Gabbay). That's b/c they're all competing for the center & somehow peace is coming back on agenda. For real? Read.

Summing up Benny Gantz's speech: He came across as a mainstream liberal on domestic issues and as a security-first rightist (i.e. not ideological right) on peace/security

Gantz embodies the Israeli mainstream, promising: Even if we don't reach peace with our neighbors, at least we'll reach domestic harmony.

Benny Gantz says his government would "strive for peace" - yes, that's significant since "peace" is an unpopular word nowadays - citing Menachem Begin of Likud and Yitzhak Rabin of Labor as peacemakers to cover his flanks on both sides.

I haven't seen Edelstein's position, but annexationists vary on this question, though the dominant "centrist" approach is to give Palestinians the status of "residents" with autonomy, w/o voting rights. I surveyed this here -

Good for : She seems to be only center politician speaking out against attack on Israel's institutions. Its ironic Israeli politicians have gone so far right, that her voice is now a lone one. Obviously based my own politics she's not my cup of tea, but credit is due.

Some right-wing Israelis see the failure to annex as an implied admission that the territories are occupied or at least up for negotiation. They believe annexation would put a halt, eventually, to any int'l pressure (which they fear) to reach a 2-state solution.

Favorite line from his op-ed: "With my background in Judaism, maybe I could have gotten into the Jewish Home party - but I'll always be in the liberal House of Hillel, and they're the conservative House of Shammai."
